A GNOME panel applet to search the internet and local files, that sits in your panel like the one in Unity would be awesome, but I can’t find one for the life of me.

I’ve been looking for one for ages after I first saw Unity during Mark’s keynote at UDS. There are investment applets, swimming fish and dancing hula girls but nothing that performs a simple Google search with a text box. The closest thing I could find is Deskbar which sounded very promising until I installed it in Lucid to find that you can no longer have an actual text field reside in the panel, instead it just has a magnifying glass icon that expands to show a text entry box when you hit it.

I want something sexy, curvy and luscious like the search bar in Unity but with all the functionality of Deskbar. At least, for a start, it could launch your default web browser and do a Google search for whatever you typed in.

Unless I have completely missed some project somewhere, I can’t seem to find anything that does this. I’d make it myself but I don’t think I have enough time to learn how to code panel applets!

What’s that sound? Is that the sound of the Ubuntu Gods suggesting someone make this?
