Opera came top in our ‘What is the fastest browser on Linux?’ test-o-rama conducted a few days back, and since then a number of you have decided to take it for a web-browsing whirl.

But a few of you have since remarked that you don’t think the browser looks as good on Ubuntu as other browsers, like Mozilla Firefox.

Opera 10.5x no longer uses Qt as its UI toolkit meaning (in theory) it ought to integrate with GNOME, Ubuntu’s default desktop environment, better than before.

Alas, this isn’t as perfect as Google Chrome or other native GTK browsers, but avid Opera user Kyle Baker has created a simple script that modifies the default Opera skin to better match the Ambiance GTK theme Ubuntu now uses by default: –

On his blog Kyle says: “The only change to the skin (thus far) is the tab bar background which now allows for a smoother appearance between the tab bar and window title.”

You can download this revamped Opera Ambiance theme from Kyle’s blog.

That’s the main window decoration take care of, but you can “Ubuntu-ify” the browser further.

Kyle also made some excellent backgrounds for the Opera speed dial. These compliment his theme wonderfully. If you’re interested in those, grab ’em from the same blog post I linked to earlier.
