Development of Ubuntu 21.04 ‘Hirsute Hippo’ is now officially underway!
Ubuntu developer Matthias Klose posted the traditional ribbon-cutting post over on the Ubuntu mailing list. There he explains that development starts with one major change in tow:
“Python 3.9 is now added as a supported Python3 version, with the goal to ship Python 3.9 as the only Python3 version in hirsute.”
Although it’s barely been a week (!) since the Ubuntu 20.10 release the developers who work on the distro don’t get chance to rest. The coming six months will required all hands on deck to help rear the Hirsute Hippo into a releasable state.
And with development of Ubuntu 21.04 now off the starting block the exact makeup of Groovy’s hairy successor will start to slide into view, pixel-by-pixel, inch-by-inch, week by week until April 22, 2021.
The early part of every release cycle is all about foundations that later “visible” changes — any of which yet to be revealed — will stand. Ubuntu 21.04 is likely to include GNOME 40, the Linux 5.9 (or newer) kernel, and updated versions of core software.
Next on the development milestone list will be Ubuntu 21.04 daily builds. These are usually spun up and made available to download a week or so after development opens. We will (obviously) let you know when those are available (and what changes, if any, they offer).
