Microsoft Devs Say Edge for Linux is “Something We’d Like to Do”

Microsoft has reiterated its desire to bring the Chromium-based Edge browser to Linux desktops, describing the task as “something we’d like to do”.

But, in the same breath, the tech giant also confirms that there are no current plans to produce builds of Edge for Linux. Or rather, no plans to do it yet.

Deja Vu? Kinda.

Microsoft has talked up the chances of bringing the Edge browser to Linux before, describing the endeavour as something they want to do ‘eventually’.

But this time they’ve gone a little bit further, expressing a little bit more enthusiasm than before.

Microsoft Edge for Linux? Not yet though

The team behind Microsoft Edge recently held an “ask me anything” (AMA) session on Reddit. These are always a risky move because, well, the internet.

During the Q&A one plucky penguin fan asked the team if there are any plans to bring Microsoft Edge to Linux.

One of the Edge browser’s development team replied:

“We don’t have any technical blockers to keep us from creating Linux binaries, and it’s definitely something we’d like to do down the road. That being said, there is still work to make them “customer ready” (installer, updaters, user sync, bug fixes, etc.) and something we are proud to give to you, so we aren’t quite ready to commit to the work just yet.”

Bizarrely, they also add that they “love” hearing Linux users ask about Linux builds of Edge. Validation, perhaps?

PSA: Don’t Get Excited/Angry

Lest anyone get too excited — or angry — at the idea of there being a Microsoft web browser running on Linux desktop, the Edge team states it has its hands full with Windows and macOS builds:

“We are super focused on bringing stable versions of Edge first to other versions of Windows (as well as macOS), and then releasing our Beta channels,” they say.

But it’s interesting that the answer isn’t a flat out no, isn’t it?
