rise of tomb raider linux release confirmed
Lara’s latest adventure lands on Linux

With the ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ Linux release date set for April 19, Feral Interactive has finally shared more details on the sort of system needed to run it.

And if you’re reading this on anything less than a “mid-range” set-up you’ll want to close the tab, lock yourself in Lara’s walk-in freezer and cry.

Why? Because the system requirements for Rise of the Tomb Raider‘s Linux port are almost as hefty as a thundering tyrannosaurs-rex from the lost valley!

Rise of the Tomb Raider: Minimum System Requirements

Below sit the “minimum specs” that Feral say you’ll need to run this critically lauded game in some sort of playable fashion.

Do keep in mind that if your system is below these specs then Lara will likely spend more exploring loading screens and error prompts than the antiquated landscapes of ancient Sibera.

  • Ubuntu 17.10
  • Intel Core i3-4130T or AMD equivalent
  • 8GB RAM
  • 2GB AMD R9 285 (GCN 3rd Gen or above); 2GB Nvidia GTX 680
  • 28GB storage

Rise of the Tomb Raider: Recommended System Requirements

If, however, you’re lucky to carry a well-equipped system in your proverbial backpack, as listed below, then you can look forward to (hopefully) smooth gameplay, high frame rates, and cracking adventure:

  • Ubuntu 17.10 (or later)
  • Intel Core i7-3770K
  • 12GB RAM (or more)
  • Nvidia GTX 980Ti
  • 28GB storage

As we mentioned in an earlier report on this release Rise of the Tomb Raider for Linux supports the Vulkan API. If your hardware doesn’t support Vulkan you can’t play this game (at least, not as intended).

So if you use an Nvidia graphics card you’ll need to be using the proprietary driver at version 396.18 (or later, depending on when you read this post).

If you use an AMD graphics card you’ll need to use Mesa 17.3.5 or later, while Vega graphics cards need Mesa 18.0 or later.

AMD GCN 1st and 2nd generation graphics cards are not supported, neither is Intel graphics cards — sorry to dash any hope you had of plundering ancient cities and frozen forests on your cheap’n’cheeful $249 laptop!

Have you bought Rise of the Tomb Raider for Linux? Will you playing it on release day? Or will you have to resort to watching other gamers’ Twitch streams for your fix of Lara Croft’s latest exploits?
