Audacity 2.1.3 has been released — the first release of the app in over a year.

The latest version of this hugely popular open-source audio editor features a number of new features, including a new distortion effect, audio scrubbing improvements, and the (long requested) ability to ‘pin’ the play/record head.

The Timer Record feature gains a few nifty new extras too, including the option to choose actions to perform on record completion, e.g., ‘Save’, ‘Export’, ‘Quit’, etc).

On Linux Audacity 2.1.3 “supports FFmpeg/libav up to avformat/avcodec 57.x.x, which is compatible with current FFmpeg 3.x.x releases”, according to the official release notes.

Nyquist effects are also said to be faster than they were in Audacity 2.1.2.

Elsewhere, Audacity 2.1.3 throws in support for Windows 10 and, on macOS, app finally supports Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad gestures without requiring the shift key to be held.

Other notable changes and improvements include:

  • Effects are no longer grayed-out when paused
  • New Scrubber toolbar
  • New option to export MP3 to Mono

Ubuntu users wanting to install the latest stable release of Audacity on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and above can do so by adding the following PPA (which although third-party is the one recommended by the Audacity developers):

Open a new Terminal window and run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/audacity
sudo apt update && sudo apt install audacity
