Visual refinements to Ubuntu’s software updater app have been accepted for inclusion in Ubuntu 13.04 ‘Raring Ringtail’, due for release in April.
The new changes, which we discussed earlier this week, aim to make the detailed information Software Updater displays to users a little easier to digest.
Now, those changes have arrived, as you can see: –
Changes made include:
- Related updates are now grouped together
- Core Ubuntu OS updates grouped as ‘Ubuntu Base’
- Libraries appear with a description, not the package name
- Package sizes moved to the right under ‘Download’ header
- ‘Install’ heading above the checkbox column
- Restart icon displayed next to updates requiring restart
In all, a decent clutch of improvements that make this integral but otherwise over-looked tool easier on the eye, and on the ol’ cognitive load.
Design changes don’t end here for Software Updater. To go with the new look, Ubuntu’s Design Team plan to revamp the Software Updater icon – look out for that soon, too!
