Last night I arrived in Ballarat after catching a train from the bustling city of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. Ballarat is the small town venue for Linux.conf.au 2012, the largest annual Linux conference in the southern hemisphere.

2012 marks the first time this conference has been held in a regional town, with previous locations including cities such as Sydney and Brisbane in Australia, and Wellington and Dunedin in New Zealand.

This week I’ll be attending talks on an extremely wide range of open source topics, including High Altitude Ballooning with Linux, EFI as a replacement for the BIOS and why it’s awful (according to Matthew Garrett), Technical Writing, a talk on Ubuntu on ARM from Canonical’s own David Mandela, and even building Android accessories using Arduino technology!

The full programme is available at http://linux.conf.au/programme/schedule and I am taking requests – if you see a cool talk, let me know and I’ll do my best to get there and write up a summary.

Right now, I’m off to the Browser miniconf to hear about Firefox’s memory usage…
