Unity Youtube Lens

The fantastic folks over at Spanish blog ‘Ataraeo‘ have put together a nifty a lens for browsing YouTube’s library of videos straight from the Dash.

The package, a YouTube ‘Scope’ (the search engine bit) and a Video ‘Lens’ (the interface bit), even comes complete with filters for narrowing down searches by popular YouTube category types.

Results can then be ordered based on relevance, date published, number of views and overall rating.

Install

To install the Lens in Ubuntu 11.10 you will need to first add the ‘Atareao Lenses’ PPA to your Software Sources.

This can be done quickest by opening a new Terminal window and entering the following commands: –

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/lenses
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lens-video scope-youtube

Once both elements have been installed you will need to log out and back in before you can use them.

It would be great if, like David Calle’s Adult Lens (NSFW), clicking on a video played the item back in a local application rather than divert you to the browser – but for a first release this Lens ticks more than enough boxes already.

Edit: The Lens now has this feature.
