A Dash-based Calculator for Unity is in need of testing – and you can help.

The ‘Unity Scope Calculator’ aims to provide you with a fast and convenient way to do simple sums without leaving your desktop.

To use it, hit the ‘Super’ key and type in your mathematical query. The ‘scope’ will analyse the sum and present an answer: –

Dash Calculator

The scope works using GCalctool – the default calculator installed in Ubuntu. With such a robust backend the scope is capable of handling most basic mathematic operators and requests such as ‘+’, ‘-‘, ‘%’, ‘sin’, ‘pi’, etc.

This scope is not finished yet hence why testing is required. The ability to copy results from the Dash to the clipboard – a function that will work by clicking the result – is yet to be implemented.

Testing the Tool

As the Unity Scope Calculator is not yet ‘stable’ or feature complete you may wish to ease off on installing it until a formal release is made.

If you’re impatient and willing to help report issues you can install it in Ubuntu 11.10 by adding and installing from the following PPA.

This can be done nby adding the bolded part to your Software Sources or by running the following commands in a new Terminal session: –

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:scopes-packagers/ppa
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install unity-lens-utilities unity-scope-calculator

After installing the scope you will need to log out and back in in-order for the tool to become available.

Bugs should be reported @ launchpad.net/onehundredscopes with the term [calculator] placed at the beginning of the subject line.
