The similarly named Update Indicator brings update alert functionality to the GNOME desktop, along with quick access links to ‘refresh and install’ options.

The utility is the work of developer Matt B., who has also created a PPA containing the extension for Ubuntu 11.04 users. The PPA can be found at launchpad.net/~
