The speed of Ubuntu-based elementary OS’s next version, code-named ‘Luna’, has been shown off by one of its developers.

In the video below appears to demo impressive blink-and-you-miss-it launching of applications, full desktop loading and even super-swift calling of Slingshot in eOS Luna.

However, it should be noted that the laptop it’s demoed on is a bit of a powerhouse, and not typical of the ‘average’ notebook let alone netbook, running an Intel i5 quad-core @ 2.3GHz, 4GB of RAM and a 7200RPM HDD.

Elementary OS Luna, to be based on Ubuntu 11.10, is expected to see release in November 2011.

Plans have since changed: elementary Luna will be based upon Ubuntu 12.04. More details can be found here.
