Modern smartphones are often dubbed ‘PC’s in your pocket’ but its the recently unveiled ‘Rasberry Pi’ that can truly make a stake to that claim.

The micro-sized PC, which is targeted at a £15/$25 price point, is made up of:

  • 700MHz ARM11 processor
  • 128MB of RAM
  • USB 2.0 ports
  • Card reader
  • 1080p HDMI video out
  • Ubuntu 9.04

And that’s it! You need to bring your own keyboard, mouse and display. Oh and Wifi dongle, too. But the Raspberry Pi does boast an I/O slot for further expansion – such as with a 12MP camera, demoed on the picture below.

‘Understanding the process of programming’

The BBC’s Rory Cellan-Jones was fortunate enough to meet up with the brains behind the scheme, David Braben, for this short interview: –

When is it coming?

The team behind the Raspberry Pi hope that device will be rolled out in “12 months” time. The success of this timeframe hinges on creating a better prototype as well as making sure it can be manufactured at the price point promised.

I’ll be keeping my eye on this.
