Sometimes you don’t want your Ubuntu desktop to be shinier than the baubles on the xmas tree and this set-up by reader breecube encapsulates that minimal-yet-elegant feel many strive for.

It uses a combination of the Faenza Variants icon set, dockbarX with its “Minimalistic” skin & the paler shade of elementary ‘elementary milk’.

Get the look

Grab the icon set Faenza Variants @ gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=134347 and install.

Next download Elementary Milk @ gnome-look.org/content/show.php/elementary-milk?content=135545 and install.

If you don’t already use DockBarX you’ll need to add the DockBar PPA and install the required packages: –

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dockbar-main/ppa

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install dockbarx dockbarx-themes-extra

Panels

Add a new GNOME Panel to the left of your screen and move the top panel to the bottom. Set the transparency of both to 0%.

Add DockBarX to the left-hand panel by right-clicking on empty space > ‘Add to Panel’ > DockBarX. Right click on the applet to find the preferences menu entry and set the skin to ‘minimalistic’.
