Opera 11 to have extensions – too little, too late?

Notice: This post is more than a year old. It may be outdated.

As an avid Opera user I heartily welcome todays news that Opera will finally be adding support for extensions.

But I can’t help wondering if, as Opera’s market share on the desktop continues to shrink*, whether this is all too little too late?

Opera Extensions will be similar to those found in other browsers. So similar that Opera claim it will be relatively ‘easy to port extensions from certain browsers’ over to Opera.

TechCrunch were able to get a preview of the Alpha (video here) and the UI of extensions (and the positioning) is similar to that found in Google Chrome.

The first Opera 11 Alpha will ship with extensions support and is due to be released ‘soon’, according to Opera.

Will Opera 11’s addition of Extensions make you more interested in using it?

*Opera’s browser share was 2.62% in September 2009, 2.03% in September 2010
