Audio Recorder Applet is, as the name implies, a recording applet for your GNOME panel.
This small tool allows you to record audio from your system soundcard, microphones, browsers, webcams & more. Put simply. if it plays out of your speakers you can record it!
Also included within the settings (see above) is a useful timer allows you to set specific durations of recording, alternatively set it to stop recording upon ‘silence’ or when a certain file size limit is reached.
Recordings can be saved as OGG, Flac, MP3 and WAV.

Packages for Karmic through Maverick – although Maverick builds are currently broken – are available in the official PPA for the utility. Add it by opening a terminal window and entering: –
- sudo add-apt-repository ppa:osmoma/rec-applet
- sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install rec-applet
To add it to your GNOME Panel just right click > ‘Add to panel…’ > Audio Recording Applet
