Keen photographers, illustrators and graphics ninjas amongst you now have the chance to help shape the look and feel of Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 — but only for the next few weeks.
After a successful run last cycle, the popular Ubuntu spin has opened up its artwork inbox once again for a new set of community-contributed wallpapers for its upcoming release, set to arrive in mid-October.
In all 10 backgrounds will be selected to ship by default, but only those that can impress users old and new alike will make the cut. Think you have the talent to make the grade? Here’s everything you need to g-know.
Wallpaper Contest Rules
As an open content, anyone can take part in the Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 wallpaper competition. You don’t have to be an award winning photographer or degree-laden illustrator to take part. All that’s needed is creativity and the know-how to be able to put it into pixels.
Ten wallpapers will be selected through a public vote, with two backgrounds coming from each of the following 5 categories:
- Nature
- Architecture
- Abstract
- Fantasy
- Space
The UG Wiki says that remixes and reinterpretations of other people’s work will be accepted but that such images must be submitted with attribution and, in a rule that stands for all entries, be compatible with the Creative Commons Sharealike license 4.0.
The full submission guidelines ask that entries:
- Do not feature brand names, logos or trademarks
- Do not use violent, religious or explicit imagery
- Should ‘strive for subtlety’ (e.g., by using a single point of focus)
- Play nicely with GNOME Shell UI
To keep things as stress-free for the artwork team, try to submit original work only, and aim for a minimum resolution/size of 2560×1600 pixels.
When you’re happy, head on over to the contest pool on Flickr (linked below) on or before August 15 to upload it. Each entrant is allowed a maximum of two submissions, so don’t be afraid to play it safe.
