Pressed DVDs of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS desktop and server are now available to pre-order from the Canonical store.
Buying a pre-made disc, which comes with custom artwork and packaging, saves the need to download and burn you own, and is ideal for distributing at free software and computing events.
Canonical provides its LoCo teams with copies of the discs for free.
Pressed discs are only produced for LTS releases, with the last ‘regular’ release to receive an official CD being Ubuntu 12.10.
A year prior to that decision the free CD request service ShipIt, which sought to broaden access to free software by providing a gratis CD to those unable to download their own, was retired.
Price
So how much will a shiny, packaged Ubuntu 14.04 LTS desktop or server DVD set you back? The store lists the following options:
- £5.04/$8 for a single disc,
- £8.50/$13.49 for a pack of 10
- £18.20/$28.88 for a pack of 20
Canonical are not currently offering discs in packs of 50, 100, or 200 as they do with the 12.04 LTS release.
A bundle pack that consists of three desktop DVDs and two server discs is also available to pre-order at £6.30.
