The beta of Steam for Linux is now available to download by all, confirming the news we brought you last week.
After 6 weeks as a private, invite-only download Valve, the makers of Steam, have opened the doors to anyone running Ubuntu 12.04.
Accompanying the beta launch are some 39 games already available for Linux, with more due to be added in the coming weeks.
Games
Along with wider acces the ‘Linux’ has been formally added to the Steam website, allowing gamers to browser Linux-compatible games.
It should be noted that the client is still in beta and bugs or incompatibilities should be expected.
For optimum performance Ubuntu recommend enabling updated drivers for NVidia and Intel cards. Instructions on how to do that are available on this wiki page.
Download
Downloading the steam client is simple: just visit the page below and his the jolly-green ‘Install Steam’ button.
Once the download has completed install the .deb file by double-clicking on it and following the prompts in the Ubuntu Software Center.
