[How To] Easily Install The Slickest Software Center on Linux

Installing software just got easier: The Linux Deepin Software Center is now available to install in Ubuntu 11.10.

The software store is easily the gems in the crown of Ubuntu-based Chinese Linux distribution ‘Linux Deepin’. It sports a clean layout, low-resource usage, and integrates package management features not present in the Ubuntu Software Centre.

Until now Ubuntu users wishing to use the application had do so from source to avoid conflicting with the Ubuntu Software Center. This issue has now been resolved, and a .Deb installer for easy installation is now available.

I’m curious. Will Canonical ditch USC and replace it with this?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_I32UYQJ2ZBOZ37UCAQPB56OVCE Luigi

No, they’ll just make USC better…

      • http://marc-andre.cc Marc-André Appel

        Maybe…

There is one accepted Software center update for Oneiric that should improve startup times. Hopefully more to come in Precise.

          • Anonymous

In Precise startup time is improved very much, now just 3 sec to load comparing to oneiric it was 10 or 11 sec in my laptop.

          • Anonymous

Just as a test, running on my laptop, athlon x2 2.1ghz.

Synaptic: 1s to open, a further 8s till ready.

USC: 21s to open, 25s till ready. After about 15 seconds of absolutely nothing happening, I began to assume that nothing was happening. Maybe if there was a splash-screen like gimp or libreoffice has, just to reasure people that something is happening.

            Few more
Gedit: 3s to load and ready when it loaded.

Terminal: Under a second to load and ready.

Banshee: 4s till open, 7s till ready.

Thunderbird: 7s till open, 8s till ready

LibreOffice writer: Splash instantly, 12s to load and ready.

Microsoft Word on Wine: 4 seconds to splash, 6 seconds till open and ready.

I do really like USC, and I agree that swapping synaptic out for usc was the right thing to do. For the average ubuntu user, usc is the best program. I just wish it were faster :/

if you use terminal a lot I suggest you install and run  guake. If you use KDE then yakuake. You can hide and show the terminal with a shortcut key :)

          • Anonymous

USC for me on i7 2.3 ghz is around 6 sec

LibreOffice Writer for me is less than 2 sec (I blame your hard drive)

          • https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ActionParsnip ActionParsnip

ust use apt-get, doesn’t need a python GUI to load. Just gets down to business :)

        Lets hope so :)

    • https://profiles.google.com/phonixor phonixor

no, its not there own, so no

      • Stijn Verwaaijen

Who cares if it’s not their own? 99% (lucky guess) of Ubuntu isn’t, right?

        • David Gomes

It doesn’t have a native GUI, and would be harder to maintain for Canonical. Plus, it’s not that good for Canonical to ditch a piece of software they’ve been working on for a while.

Besides, as I heard, it doesn’t show paid applications, and sincerely, that just sucks. For both users and Canonical. I want to know about all applications, and Canonical needs to make sure their partners are able to sell software via Ubuntu.

          • Stijn Verwaaijen

            That makes sense…

    • Amartya Datta Gupta

Its not THAT revolutionary that canonical will drop their own software for this.

  • Scriptwarlock

can i install this on my pangolin A1?

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ Joey-Elijah Sneddon

I haven’t tested it on Precise, but the worst that can happen if you install it is that it (the app) won’t work.

    • Anonymous

       Works fine in my 12.04.

Yes. I’m on Precise and it works great

Lucky me in the country south of China.

  • Pikopio

Is it compatible with 11.04 64bits?

  • Anon Ymous

…in case of speed, it’s ways better the ubuntu usc, but it doesn’t integrate very well with the other gui elements (such as windowborders, buttons), so it looks like a foreign object (imho). another point for me it’s, that’s just looks too colorful…

British English sounds sooo much nicer than American English.

    • https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ActionParsnip ActionParsnip

Its the right english too with proper spellings ;)

      • Stian-René Espeland

And you’re funnier. And less annoying.

Love British humor. Especially Ricky Gervais, Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington. Karl is the best though.
Wait, what does this have to do with the Software Center?

        • https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ActionParsnip ActionParsnip

Spelling. the word has its origins in french, so based on this; centre is correct ;)

          • Anonymous

the american spelling was based on that “centre” was an exception to some spelling/punctuation rules … origin was not taken into consideration though.

They are neither right nor wrong … just different.  American english is strangely much more coherently organized, while british english stays  remarkably true to etymology.

NOTE: the differences between them are small, but these are just  what those small differences have as a small effect.

        • https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ActionParsnip ActionParsnip

Check Greg Davies, Ross Noble and Tom Stade too. If you can

          • Stian-René Espeland

            Thanks mate. I will.:)

        • Owen Llywelyn

These are all English comedians. Britain is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Just saying :-)

          • Stian-René Espeland

I am from Norway. I am perfectly aware of the European geography.:) And I know they are English. But isn’t all Englishmen also British? Therefore my use of the word British. :)

      • Jonathan Wong

Color is spelled colour not the lazy American way of color.

        • http://bixlerbear.com Jacob Bixler

Why is that extra letter needed?

          • Tim Holley

with color, it looks like it should be pronounced col-or, with colour the ou translates how you actually say it better onto paper.

          • Cody

Maybe it’s just me but i pronounce it col-or. I think it’s that lazy american in me.

          • http://twitter.com/reivanen kim reivanen

Well i pronounce it col-or. Col-our sounds french.

          • Anonymous

it really makes no difference … none at all, it is superfluous.

PS. damn, now you got me saying “col-our” … it sounds mighty weird

          • Jonathan Wong

I’m American but that was really just a joke about it being lazy.  But really, colour makes more sense.

          • Anonymous

Don’t get us Brits started on SulPHur, PHosPHor, AlumINIum…, Route as in root…

        • Sebastian Billaudelle

Well, the words origin ist Latin. And it’s “color” there…

It’s not that simple, actually. But I tend to agree in general;)

        • http://profiles.google.com/travisman1994 travis hoeffel

You all are just  trying to copy the French.  That is why you have all these different spellings with -our instead of -or.  The only thing you have correct is the words with -t at the end instead of -ed.  Burnt, learnt, spellt etc….

          • Rahul Dsouza

The wast majority of English words actually have French origins because French was actually spoken in the English court for 300 years after the Norman conquest of 1066. Having said that the most used words are still of Anglo-Saxon origin.

      • Carlos Felipe Pessoa de Araújo

“right english” ? ‘Ic lufie hit…

        • https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ActionParsnip ActionParsnip

Notice the winky, that implies a joke. Most people would put [sic]

    • Carlos Felipe Pessoa de Araújo

In Brazil, we learn American English.

      • Robert Adonias Costa Gomes

        unfortunately….

and that’s the reason I keep trying to mock the accent after watching movies like “V for Vendetta”…

        • Stian-René Espeland

Same situation in Norway. I blame American TV shows. Shame really. I try to listen to English podcasts.

          • Craig Weber

Why is one better or worse than the other? In a lot of ways, it makes more sense for schools to teach American English as America is the prominent country for the time being. If China becomes the prominent country, it would benefit people to learn the most mainstream dialect.

          • Stian-René Espeland

There is nothing wrong with American English. Except the Jersey/guido accent.;)

I’ve been to the states many times on business, mostly in the Southern states, and those accents is amazing.

But British accents are in my point of view much easier on the ears. Besides, I think comedy is better in that accent.

      • Anonymous

In Poland I learned British English but I think it was by accident. ;) Most of the time people here learn American English. I love British accent though, and try to get better at it.

      • Clive Payton

You know what the language differences are annoying with english and american english. They need to sit down and figure out whats good and whats not. Center and meter is better in american english. However, the sad thing about learning american english is the imperial system. The amiercans tell the rest of us they will not use our system of measurements and thats we must use theirs. I can think of no greater arrogance.

        • Trent

What? When has America ever tried to force others to use imperial? The only reason they still use it is because of the money it would take to switch

          • Clive Payton

Hahahah, all the time trust me. We have things pushed onto us in the media and with our containers ect. Do you know why our cans of coke are 355ml in NZ because its like perfectly 12oz. Also feet in altitude on planes and knots on the sea. Give me a break, the USA not switching has cost the whole world lots of money.

    • Incogweedo

As an American, I can fully agree with this statement ;)

    • Clive Payton

Also the british date system day month year makes a million times more sense than putting month day year. Also its Aluminium. The whole bloody world spells it that way except america. In french its Aluminium, in German its Aluminium in real English its Aluminium ect ect ect.

I don’t know about the skeuomorphism here. I don’t think the wood-panel texture really serves any purpose here.

It is slow, but I love it – It’s a lot better then USC.

  • http://johannpopper.myopenid.com/ Johann popper

Yeah this software doesn’t work at all, as it won’t accept my password at startup.

  • Anonymous

The Deepin Software Center looks really nice, I hope Canonical takes on board some of the ideas. Maybe not for the LTS, but the next release after that.

Also, why on earth would I want to watch that video in 3D?

  • Josh Melling

II do not like it at all, Its got an Aero like theme and is to flashy (plus has less software then USC)
Seems to be quite responsive, but so is USC on precise.  I much prefer USC, what i would like to see in USC is product keys and more Ubuntu-one integration for apps

    • Zombifier

Yeah… if the devs provide a Ambiance theme for DSC.

  • http://www.FreezingMoon.org/ Dread Knight

Any idea where I can find the wallpaper used in the video?

  • http://twitter.com/Azthma Azthma

I do prefer the native Ubuntu Software Center.

  • Len

Tried to install in 10.04. Install hung setting up the software center. Now, whenever I try to install anything, in Terminal I get…

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run ‘sudo dpkg –configure -a’ to correct the problem.

If I try to run the command, it tries to resintall the deepin software center, and it just sits there not doing anything.

Is there a way to kill/purge this package?  If I try, sudo apt-get purge deepin-software-center Terminal replies with the same response.

    Thanks.

  • Seventh Reign

Its freakin` Awesome.  So much faster than USC and Mint’s Software Manager.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UFCNPNEKQKJJL5VU7TGFUSQIUA mmhmm

this is what made me click download. lol, thanks

Talking about collaborative nature of linux software development, i hope like clem ( of mint fame!!) works on this, and incorporates it in mint. The current software centre in mint is one of its weak points. I would like to see a mashup of what is found in mint, ubuntu and deepin.

In america there is many diffrent dialects. here is a map.

What zone are you in. Im in the midwest.

    • Anonymous

midwest here too (yay michigan … kinda).

I find that our dialect isn’t as “special” as others … it tends to be plain, straightforward, and easy to understand.  I need to learn a new york accent. ;P

  • RodneyLee

I tryed this, did a couple test updates and now Unity barely works and Nautilus is dead

  • Anonymous

I can’t say I like this new software center.
Lists of apps, stored like a newspaper so you have to scroll and click More to see all the apps. I’m sorry, but I can’t really see how this is any better than ubuntu’s software center where you can simply choose a category from the side menu and scroll down. For me, that way better.
I am sorry if I sound like a negative Nancy now, but that’s just my personal opinion.

    I need help.

I installed DSC in Ubuntu 10.04. I know it is for 11.10, mu mistake.

Now it is stuck up at ‘setting up deepin software center 2.0.5′

I can’t run synaptic or update manager. Synaptic asks to reconfigure dpkg and again i am stuck up at ‘setting up DSC’

Even update manager prompts for partial upgrades and then it’s stuck up at same point

I have left it for 30 mins still nothing is happening.

    Please help
