44 Community Wallpapers Shortlisted for Ubuntu 11.10

More than 40 community wallpapers have been shortlisted for inclusion in Ubuntu 11.10.

CD size contraints mean that it is unlikely all 44 wallpapers will ship on the Ubuntu CD. Ubuntu’s Ian Farrell, who oversees the bi-annual wallpaper contest, has said he aims to get as many into the final release on October 13th as possible – so if you have a favourite keep your fingers crossed!

The Ubuntu Community Wallpaper contest is run each cycle and allows users to submit photo and illustrative wallpapers for potential inclusion in Ubuntu by default.

A .zip containing all 44 of the shortlisted wallpapers can be downloaded at bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-wallpapers/+bug/829213

oooops that’s weird. When I first viewed this article, there’s only one table of images. and now they’re two? :)

          Look again, there’s three! ;P

I was trying the find the best way to show all 44 images without each being too small to make anything out.

lol.. that explained it. :) i thought my browser’s broken or something.

hope this will be the last:

it’s on the 1st row 1st column from the 3rd pile of images. XD

I recognize it, I’m not sure if I have seen it in Windows though.

My dad used one like this when he used Ubuntu… Not sure if it’s Windows’ though…

Yuck… too much nature pics… I much prefer artistic types of wallpapers!

    • Chad Germann

To go even further too much eggplant, secondly two ocelot inspired wallpapers (that are basically the same) is a tad overboard when they could have given us one more different background

      Congratulations to the artists

those are just the community submitted, they are not the official ones yet.

only one ocelot will prevail !

    New wallpapers for the eyes…
…and a new sound scheme for the ears ?!

I hope so but I don’t think so though :p
Although I like the african drum sounds, they’re getting a bit out of date compared to the eye candy.

Now a login sound for the Oneiric Ocelot

      …well, its a smallish wild cat that has a dreamy adjective, so the Ubuntu drums should be replaced with the sound of an Ocelot meowing as though its woken up from a bad dream. Something like this;

      Any takers?

The two purple ones with the orange ocelot look great.

That is, until I saw them full sized and saw the ocelot was in fact a pointy mesh. Its a shame they weren’t just flat images instead, as these look somewhat unfinished.

What’s wrong with Ocelot images by Sayantan Chaudhuri?
Did someone downsampled first, or badly resized them?

    • Klonuo Umom

Better versions are on his Picasa profile, check it out.
They could be even better quality, but compared to ones provided above they are great :)

Klonuo: Iain’s now sent me the originals for uploading.

As well as the compressed ones, I’m thinking about putting out a ‘ubuntu-wallpapers-high-quality’ extension package.  It would be an option 120MB add-on download but would show off some of the contributions in their original form.  (The compression used on the CD is for space concerns.  We can only have 0.5% of the CD for the wallpapers as the operating system needs to fit too!).

What do you think, would you be interested in an add-on download with the full-resolution images?

        • Klonuo Umom

I’m fine now that I found his Picasa images. I quite like atmosphere on both “Ocelot” wallpapers and I’m actually using them right now on day/night change ;)

It seems they are ray-traced – Ocelots have light source and whole fog like effect is ruined to unacceptable when compressed. Thou I guess you know better. Cheers

          • http://www.paul.sladen.org/ Paul Sladen

Klonuo Umom: Why would I know better?  Ubuntu is a group effort, and if you have skills or time to spend on optimising the compression across the whole set of wallpapers, it would be genuinely appreciated. The wallpaper budget for the CD is 3,101,218 bytes.  This gives about 200 kB per image, so it’s a trade-off; giving more space to some images reduces the space for others.  Overall, the hope is to find the least worst option.I’d also welcome any contacts for academics or researchers with a background in SSIM analysis+feedback optimisation.

OK, IMHO you could contact the author of those wallpapers and ask him for lo-fi version. It’s raytraced in Blender AFAIK and the best result can be offered by the one that has the sources.
Maybe in this whole contest organizers could have asked participants for low-resolution versions besides original?

I don’t think I have magic skills, but changing dithering options could lead in more steep-less result.
I assume you use Gimp, so after you reduce image with better dithering option, you can apply correction like this for example:
            1. apply small amount of “Selective Gaussian blur”
            2. enhance slightly with “Unsharp mask”

            Cheers

That sure is a useful and enlightening comment. Why do you think I haven’t contributed anything? Why do you think that giving my opinion about what is good and what is not or suggestions for improvement isn’t a contribution in and of itself? What gives you the idea that any wallpaper I’d make would be any good? And why do I have to be a contributor to exercise my right to free speech?

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=624332017 Robert Anderson

          Ditto

      • Andreas Mieritz

What’s up with that elitist atitude? If we don’t like something we can’t say that we don’t like it, unless we make something better?

Come on, critique is what makes art better in the first place.
        -1 if I could.

        • Christian wichmann moesgaard

No, you can’t criticize something unless you can make something better. As a result, we must all like Windows because otherwise we could just make something better ourselves, without ever criticizing it, of course.

Also, I’m glad that you cannot do a -1 as such a weapon could become devastating when used by silly minds such as yours.

The above post contains not a shred of sarcasm.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=624332017 Robert Anderson

I don’t mind being critiqued. I was just being sarcastic. So apologies if I offended.

Wow, I must say that for the first time I most of them are REALLY great. The one with vector ocelot should be default.

  • Anonymous

Most are nice, but I think a wallpaper has to be smooth and mostly “empty”. A busy wallpaper makes it harder to see desktop icons.

Of course that’s not a problem if you don’t use desktop icons at all.

I’m a big fan of Vladstudio’s (http://www.vladstudio.com) wallpapers and wallpaperclocks (although these don’t work well under Linux because the required screenlet is very buggy.)

  • Jerson Pacheco

    Great wallpappers, thanks!
