Indicator Datetime nabs some natty new choices

Ubuntu 11.04′s panel clock Indicator – Indicator Datetime – has received a handful of new features in a recent update.

A location pin board, similar to that used during initial installation of Ubuntu, allows you to visually set your time zone; a speedy  improvement over list trudging.

A wealth of customization options are also present in the alpha update, letting you opt to display: -

  • The weekday
  • The date
  • Time format (12/24 hour)
  • Seconds

Whilst the list of ‘clock menu’ options includes: -

  • Show a monthly calendar
  • Show week numbers in monthly calendar
  • Display evolution calendar events
  • Times in other locations

Previous method of changing indicator-datetime’s layout involved using dconf-editor. Now tailoring the clock to tick to your beat is never more than check-box away.

See… I’m not the one to spread hatred around here, but this is nearly *exactly the same* it looks on OS X. Not that that’s a very bad thing, but I raise my voice for more originality than plagiarism. :|

See, the world map is total and fully upstream GNOME. GNOME interface has always had similarities and, let’s say, shared details with OS X’s interface. GNOME 3 now more than ever.

Where does that map live upstream? AFAIK both upstream map/s look difference (i.e. the one in the panel clock, and the one in the date and time settings)

Only the glossy red pin shouldn’t be copied (what do we have a talented design team for?).

the only solution for that is: MAKE IT ORANGE! :D

Or the recent favourite of Ubuntu designers : Aubergine . I genuinely had not idea about that word until they started using it. (though I have heard its pretty commonly used in UK)

Then you’ve obviously never played “Harvest Moon”.

          • Anonymous

No I didn’t but Google tells me that US version has the word ‘eggplant’ instead of ‘aubergine’ . I was taught that its called ‘brinjals’, in my school :P

If it improves Ubuntu, maybe it SHOULD be the same.

Clicking on a projection map just seems like the most straightforward way to choose location. So of course the two designs have something in common.

I don’t think you spread hatred, but you didn’t really add any constructive criticism. :) Do you have any ideas that would be more original? Do you want to spin a 3D globe, or zoom from continent->country->region, or what?

      • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

You’re totally right. There’s a time when a proven idea is proven. Being contrary for the sake of it – particularly to the detriment of usability – is foolish.

In fact, Chakra’s installer, called Tribe, has a 3D Globe for location choosing. It uses the resources from KDE’s Marble. It’s eye-catching and not an usability nightmare at all. http://chakra-project.org/

Mmmnn, now that I think, will the Ubuntu One’s tabs layout be on the whole system? If you get what I mean.

    • zekopeko

I hope so. I’m really digging the new tabs.

      • Anonymous

        + 1

    • Anonymous

Seriously Man!!! but I don’t get the point in using those tabs.

“A good consistent interface”… wasn’t it the point while creating the Ayatana and bringing over the whole cosmetic changes…

These tabs breaks consistency and also the Ubuntu Software Center does the same.

I feel it would have been better to have kept USC consistent with Nautilus… that saves a learning curve and also USC would have felt as if a part of the system rather another software tucked into the mix of heaven…

*Note: It’s only and only my opinion… :)

Hopefully the Evolution lock-in is temporary.

Ditching gnome-clock was a golden opportunity of establishing a app-independent protocol for tasks and calendaring, and it would be sad to see it simply go to waste.

I’ve always wondered why Spain is GMT+1 while England, with similar longitude is GMT.

So this is about to provide exactly the same functionality in good old clock applet? Am I missing something here?

The indicators thing is becoming more and more a Gnome applet’s clone. Did we really need this long trip to end at the same point we were departing from?

    I’m puzzled.

The main benefit I see here is now the notification area or whatever you want to call that tray in the top right, is one consistent menu. Not components of different systems all put together up there in the corner. So if you click on one, you can arrow across to the next without running into issues. Adds heaps to accessibility and consistency.

Where is this? I’ve got a fully-updated (as of about an hour ago) natty (and rebooted since for a different reason) and the datetime indicator doesn’t have any of this; just a link to the date and time setting dialogue that just has a timezone menu, option to select which time server to use, and no time format customization at all.

    • http://twitter.com/StrangerNoise Rachel Greenham

well that is odd. What i said above is certainly true; a reboot (for installing a fw800 card) after the most recent update, but now after another logout/login there it all is.

      So ignore me. :-)

Back in 2007 or 08 there was an option to let the clock show the Unix time. Where did that go???

  • http://forteller.net/ Børge / forteller

Does anyone know if we can finally set Monday as the first day of the week? I’m pretty sure a big part of the world (most?) has Monday as the first day, so it’s quite ridiculous that we still can’t display it as such!

Please make the clock menu faster! On my computer (Celeron 743) it takes 2-3 seconds to appear and it’s very irritating.

I keep hoping someone will add a Meego-like dash to unity that shows your new tasks and appointments. That was my favorite thing about Meego.
