Stay Hidden on GTalk in Empathy: Fix

GTalk Empathy users may have come across the following bug: – You change your status to ‘hidden’ but Empathy shows you as ‘Busy’ – this can lead to all manner of super embarrassing moments…

"Hey – I thought you said you had to go offline so you could save a puppy from a skydiving manic?"

Whilst the bug has been fixed in Telepathy 0.11, the fix cannot be installed from the Telepathy Development PPA because of dependency  issues.

Owais Lone let us know that there’s a simple way around it: install one of these 3 deb files and you can once again pretend to be offline when you’re really online.

Now they need to implement the option to turn off logging and I might switch from Pidgin. :)

welcome then. the feature to turnoff logging is already implemented in 2.32

While I like the bug fixes, I would like the chance to say that personally, the things that turn me off to Empathy the most are 1. The fact that new conversations sit in the system tray until you happen to notice them, instead of making a new window like Pidgin. 2. The fact that it wants to dump all of my contacts that it imported from Pidgin into one big “unclassified” category and it would take me hours to sort through for it to be as sanely organized as Pidgin (i.e. mostly by protocol). 3. mbpurple for Twitter doesn’t work. 4. More of a nitpicky thing, but I like the ability to add extensions to Pidgin; my favorite one is one that automatically puts me as Away when I lock my screen. On the other hand, the thing I hate the most about Pidgin is how it ends up lagging after a while; from what I can piece together this may have to do with the XMPP protocol, which is used by Facebook and my two GTalks, if I’m not mistaken. I guess as omer akram said, nothing is perfect, but I wish it were a little closer, because I do love Pidgin and I could at least learn to like Empathy.

Then again, I also miss the functionality to show individual off-line contacts. I want certain people to appear in my contact list even if they are off-line. Now I can see all of them or none. :)

Clarify this for a poor soul: there are six deb packages. Three are for 32bit, three for 64bit. I take all the 32bit packages (because the first won’t install without the second).

Wont this fix make it into the main repo of maverick?

Wanted this so badly. I’d stopped logging in to Google account. Hope I can manage to install the fixed release.

Cool, will this be fixed for ICQ also? Hitting invisible sets my status to busy there too!

    Wow, I didn’t know it.
I hope someday, someone will put it in Natty repositories.

Is there anyway to show whether or not a contact is logged in from a mobile device yet? This kills Empathy for me, without this feature I cannot switch from Pidgin.
