Fix ‘blank’ photo prints problem in GIMP

Many users were surprised to find out that, after upgrading to Maverick, GIMP no longer prints out photographs, but instead prints out blank pages. Fortunately, I have found the fix to this, which shall land in Maverick through update-manager in a few weeks.

Instructions to get the fix (for the impatient)

Since ‘waiting for a few weeks for an annoying bug to be fixed’ is difficult for you and me, I have created a PPA and uploaded the fixed version of GIMP to the PPA.

To install the fixed version of gimp, run the following commands in a terminal one after the other:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bilalakhtar/gimp

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The PPA contains only the ‘gimp’ package, and I have tested the fix well, hence there are no chances of ‘horrible things happening’.

Strange how little innocent things like this keep happening between Ubuntu releases. ALT+Print is another example – The hotkey refuses to work. THe fix for that one though is to just change it to something else (one of the buttons on my mouse for me), but it’s just strange that it’s even a problem to begin with.

Hotkeys are kind of a funny since we moved from hal. If you file a bug report on launchpad against devicekit (I think thats where to file it) and they can sort it out.

AFAIK even devicekit has been deprecated and moved to udev.

Of course not. But in the future, in such cases, I would recommend you to search launchpad for bugs on the offending package, and in most cases you will find others having the same issues.

To list bugs on a single package, go to this url:
      http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/PACKAGENAME
where PACKAGENAME is gimp, empathy, nautilus, etc (the package whose bugs you want to search)

Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind the next time something breaks :)

Awesome work Bilal, the self promotion can be a little off putting though.

I don’t find this self-promotion. Isn’t it good for everyone to know who is doing what? Isn’t this happen a lot on Planet too?

Bloody marvelous! By complete coincidence I happened to be posting up a thread on this subject when along comes your solution. I ran it all and it works. Thank you.

BTW – I can’t log into your site via my Facebook login. I had to use Yahoo instead.

I originally came across this bug with GIMP 2.7. I’ve since downgraded and am using 2.6 with the patched version.

Anyone have a fix for 2.7?
