WinFF provides an interface to command line FFMpeg conversion

There are many file conversion tools out there – Handbrake, Arista & command line based options using FFmpeg  to name but a few.

WinFF provides a GUI for the above mentioned command line video converter FFMPEG and can convert almost any video file into another thanks to the wide format support FFmpeg enjoys.

Better still WinFF is able to convert multiple files into them same format at the same time, perfect for transcoding those .ogv's, .flv's and that odd .mov knocking around into .avi in one click.

Interface

The interface to WinFF is too simple not to understand; click 'add' to add videos, set the 'convert to' format and whack the 'convert' button to get going.

The buttons do, admittedly, look odd and the application doesn't feel as native as other tools available. What it lacks for in beauty it makes up for in power.

WinFF features:

  • Simple interface
  • Able to converts multiple different files all to the same format at once.
  • Can convert audio – including video to audio
  • No external codecs needed
  • A selection of conversion pre-sets are included for hassle-free use
  • Supports FFmpeg’s multi threading for dual core processors

An 'options' button also provides access to further advanced features such as: -

  • bitrate
  • frame size
  • frame rate
  • Ability to add command line parameters

Tools like these are very much needed to revive the interface of FFmpeg. FFmpeg’s CLI Interface is too complicated for just small video editing tasks!

I’ve been using WinFF for years. Glad to see it get some recognition.

If anyone knows how to do that plz post here…

Anybody been able to get video converted for the Sansa Fuze with this? Won’t have a chance to try it out for another 8 hours or so. Just curious.

There is a problem with using WinFF in Ubuntu…since it uses the ffmpeg from repositories, there are a lot many (restricted) formats it cannot convert to. This problem is not present in the Windows version because it ships with a complete ffmpeg build with everything enabled. A glaring side effect is that you see a lot of presets in Windows’ WinFF which are not present in the Ubuntu version.

Hmm. Maybe a custom compile of ffmpeg will solve this problem…however that may be daunting for users?

    • Muhammad Negmualldean

      it does
you must compile ffmpeg and x264

Or you enable the Medibuntu repo to solve the problem.

ff23m is all we need. 3m being webm. Lets get everything in one format so we can finally put to rest all this mess.

  • Fishears

Great app but surprised to see it featured now. Could understand it if there had been a big update…

  • https://launchpad.net/~stefan-ubuntu StefanT.

I don’t understand all available options. It’s not easy to create new preset because it doesn’t eliminate CLI completely. For example it can look like this>

    -f avi -r 29.97 -vcodec libxvid -vtag XVID -s 640×480 -aspect 4:3 -maxrate 1800kb -b 1500kb -qmin 3 -qmax 5 -bufsize 4096 -mbd 2 -bf 2 -flags +4mv -trellis -aic -cmp 2 -subcmp 2 -g 300 -acodec libmp3lame -ar 48000 -ab 128kb -ac 2

Preset Label is XviD FullScreen. What does it stands for? What does it mean?

How do I choose same video quality?

  • Colrakeshgupta

    Wonderful application !
    Why I didn’t know it earlier !

I’ll stick to the command line I think.

  • http://openid-provider.appspot.com/mark.myemailaddress redradish

Cool! So this offers more formats than handbrake?

  • Mkarall

I’m missing presets for Android phones in winff, since Android seems pretty picky about what it plays.
