OMG Video: Probing Your Box, Grub 2 and You!

If I had to pick one horror story that I get messaged about the most, it would be the dreaded bootloader. “It’s missing” orI have a black screen of death..” and some people edit their grub.cfg without realizing it can disable you from booting at all, essentially turning your computer into a brick. Yay!

EDIT regarding Video: Don’t take life too seriously, you’ll never get out of it alive. ;-)

Most of you already know that when you power on your computer, the first software that runs is a bootloader that invokes the OS from the computer. GRUB, the GRand Unified Bootloader, is an important part ofmany Linux systems. Above are a few tips to help address the issues with Grub 2.

What are your Grub stories?

“Also could you stop shouting in the Top Posts sidebar? :)” is actually a joke in reference to the posts being in all capitals in that section. so you didn’t understand what he wrote. and it seems like you don’t like it when people give their opinion. Joey doesn’t want his blog ruined by the righteous. keep asserting you’re right and people will walk outta here.

wow that was actually informative, did expect that from the red head nice surprise. the omg ubuntu techno voice intro is a little annoying though

given all of the furore that has gone on in previous nixie posts we tend to err on the side of caution with most things. I agree it wasn’t a bad word per se, but some people *might* complain… and it saves us all a headache on posts such as this to just nix it. (so to speak)

Okay, since it has started I will bring my once anonymous comment out.

Suggestive comments give others the right to make sexualized comments back.

If Nixie wants to go around saying think like “I love to have my box probed” she better be ready for the types of comments that will be made in response.

This is not a gender issue. Anyone who goes around making statements like that is going to get what some would consider negative attention.

This is not the time nor place for it and I refer you to our CoC

Authors encouraging behaviour that violates the COD is entrapment good sir.

Making humorous asides does not render half of the comments I’ve had to delete so far anywhere near acceptable, and as this thread is not related to GRUB we’ll have to agree to disagree and leave it there.

Terrible thing it is. Only people that is psychologically sick would dare to find a sexual insinuation in her words… turn off your dirty mind when you see a pretty girl, so you could respect her, could you?

  • zacH

Never mind, I checked your blog. A bit out of my price range, but it takes very, very nice video! Keep up the great work ^_^

The issue of grub/grub2 documentation caused a lot of fuss for me back in 9.10. A friend installed a Windows partition on my computer, eating the MBR. I promptly liveboot in, try to use the grub1 command to fix it, and get an error. I think I had to chroot into my main partition to do it? It was certainly a hassle, because I didn’t know Ubuntu used a newer grub. That’s the nice thing about testing other Linux distros, you can still access your other partitions from the guest’s bootloader. :P

    Golly people get a grip…this is a LINUX video….don’t think like that..gosh

I don’t say that for you, but for the people that do think in sexual insinuation in her words. If you came to learn about grub2, I think you could then well ignore my comment because it doesn’t suites you.

    Wait, you “screwed” your motherboard?

SEXUAL INSINUATION. QUICK MODERATORS GET HIM.

Oh wait, I’m a moderator. My bad.

As Michael below pointed out, it’s the Labour Party symbol, which I assume you already knew.

I’m hoping to stand for my local council for Labour in next May’s elections. Ward selection beforehand though – I’d best get canvassing.

    sexual/trollish/destructive/inappropriate are all grey

Just below there is a comment thats says “beautiful voice! :-).” There are definitely people who would start down the ‘women are not to be treated as sexual objects’ road.

where do you draw the line? If we cater to the lowest common denominator would we be left with anything at all? Heck, there are parts of the world where a female simply appearing uncovered covered.

And a bit further down a person wrote “hah, fail xD” which if was referring to me would hurt my feelings. Isn’t that that deconstructive? Or maybe the problem is with me, and that I have to understand that I won’t like everything I see on the internet.

All of this is to say that there is lots of discussion to be had in internet ethics 101 (which I literally took last semester except it was titled slightly differently) but no real answers. To say “Just internet ethics 101″ is an oversimplification as it is an incredibly complicated topic.

I’d rather use an internet where people say that I fail from time to time then an internet where I am censored. And if I am really self conscious I will watch what i say (eg not opening myself up to criticism by doing things such as making sexual jokes) and will avoid online communities.

Anyway, too much posting here on omg. I’ll shutup now unless there is a response to this that really warrants another response.

In any event, I read omg daily, but the handling of comments section here is taking away from the linuxing experience. But hey, I’m just one person.
