Ubuntu 10.10 Ambiance & Radiance themes for Chrome, Firefox & Opera [Updated]

The default Ambiance theme in Ubuntu 10.10 – and its lighter sibling Radiance – have received lots of due love and attention since Lucid and thusly many  third-party browser “themes” have also been pepped up in anticipation.

Radiance ChromiumAmbiance chromium by SWOriginal are the best looking and best ‘fitting’ Chrome/ium themes available for use on the Ubuntu 10.10 desktop.

SWOriginal's Radiance Firefox Persona for Maverick users

KyleBaker has long been mentioned here on OMG! Ubuntu! for his fantastic Ambiance and Radiance Opera skins.

He’s wasted no-time in making them Maverick ready either, and both can be installed @ kyleabaker.com/2010/05/26/ambiance-skin-and-speed-dial-backgrounds/

the firefox one is just a beige background colour.

personas are not really themes, hence their ability to modify the look is limited

      • daas88

yup, although it does it’s job looking like radiance.
        but where’s the ambiance persona?

        • SWOriginal

I didnt create an ambiance persona as the ones other users created for 10.04 still work well with 10.10… if there is a slight color difference its not noticeable :)

    • Seahorse Pip

100% right, but then a zipped background XD

how is it best when it dont use the icons from humanity theme?

    • joajimenez

When I change my theme and icons on Ubuntu, Chrome change its icons too.

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

If you set Chrome/ium to use ‘gtk’ theme then it uses the Humanity icons…

Unfortunately it then looks like this.. http://i.imgur.com/j21tU.png

it doesnt look bad either, i guess you get 2 choices with chrome :)

        • daas88

The thing with chrome/ium gtk theme is the color in the tab bar, it doesn’t look so nice with most themes.

      • Seahorse Pip

temporary fix: got to themes then edit theme->colors and change the orange to the backgroundcolor ;)

d0od are you using chromium 5? this buttons are much better in 6

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

The screenshots were taken in Chrome dev channel but yes, the buttons do look MUCH nicer in Chromium.

Why are you guys talking about Chromium when the latest Chrome is available???

      • Seahorse Pip

latest chrome is not newer then latest chromium build…

      • http://twitter.com/jntesteves Jonatas Esteves

Maybe because Chromium is an open-source browser while Google’s Chrome is a proprietary product built with it.

        • Anonymous

Well, not sure about Chrome not being open source or not. But if I remember few months back when I tried Linux last, Chromium used to be a bit behind in versions considering Window’s Chrome. It was when Chrome was not available for Linux yet.
It’s great is Chromium is as good as Chrome now ;)

          • Anonymous

also, chromium does not track everything you do and if you get the latest build it may be faster and more optimized

  • Penny

Chromium works so well with all of the themes in Xubuntu.

cant wait to upgrade to 10.10

The best Ambiance theme for chromium (at least 7.*) is the following:

    - Use System titlebars and borders
    - Append the following line to your gtkrc file:

    gtk_color_scheme = “frame_color:#353431ninactive_frame_color:#353431″

The ones you mentioned modify also your theme colors and icons!

Ambiance installed well, but there seems to be an error, I downloaded Radiance but when I unpacked it I got Ambiance.crx and not Radiance.crx.

Another tip is to install the Gnome Classic-theme in Firefox as it uses the current GTk-theme, it’s icons a.s.o… I’ve tested a couple of FF ‘personas’ for Radience- and Elementary-themes but none of them look as good as the Gnome Classic-theme.

Switched to the Ambience theme for Opera; thanks.

The theme you linked to fits with the theme used in Ubuntu 10.04. This theme fits with the theme used in Ubuntu 10.10, which is different in several ways, including color palette.

    • poltak

Oh, I didn’t realise. I thought it was the same other than the window buttons… bit of a blonde moment ;)

    cool

What’s wrong with the native GTK looks? If you use the default theme in Ubuntu 10.04/10.10 you’ll have that look in Firefox.

To accomplish the same thing in Chrome go to the “personal stuff” tab under “Preferences” click on the “Use GTK+ Theme” under “Appearance”.

Why fix something that isn’t “broken”?

I installed the Chromium theme for my Chrome v6.0.472.63 browser. The background color changed to the dark grey of the Ubuntu Ambiance theme, but the three buttons are still ugly MS Windows style. How come?

Does anyone know how to change the cheesy looking icon theme in Firefox 4 with a more serious one?

The Firefox Themes manager is known by the name Personas. You can find even more than 30,000 themes from the official website of the mozilla firefox. It is very easy to install them and all you need to to is to open your Firefox, click on your big Firefox button and in a drop down menu you need to pick Add-ons. A new tab appears and on the left side click on Get Add-ons. After that on the right side of the screen you will see the Features Personas section.
