How to install Adobe Air in Ubuntu 10.10 64bit

A reader called Joshua stopped by the OMG! Inbox and asked whether I could post a quick guide to installing Adobe Air on Ubuntu 10.10 64bit.

So Joshua – and other early adopters missing their Air fix – here is a quick tutorial.

Step One: Install ia32-libs

Installing the ia32-libs package is our first step. This provides Air with 32bit libraries it can’t live – or run – without.

Click to install ia32-libs

Step two: Get some Air

Next download the Adobe Air .bin file (direct link here).

Step Three: Installation

Open a terminal (applications > Accessories > Terminal) and navigate to your Downloads folder (or the folder inwhich you saved the .bin file).

  • cd Download/

We need to let the .bin file have permissions to install so enter the following command carefully: -

  • chmod +x AdobeAIRInstaller.bin

Now lets install it:

  • ./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin

Installation should zip though and, if everything goes okay, a new menu entry will appear in ‘Applications > Accessories’ titled ‘Adobe Air Application Installer’.

If Adobe makes 64-bit Flash for Linux again, I will love them again. I have to stay with the old Flash for x64, and YT is broke on it.

Just use 64-bit Opera. It uses both 64-bit and 32-bit plugins without any major problems.

      • http://thealphanerd.wordpress.com/ Calvin

Opera is as ugly as sin without any anti-aliasing here, don’t really care for it either, and I prefer using a native plugin for performance reasons. (DIE NSPLUGINWRAPPER DIE)

There’s something wrong with your system + Opera then. Out of all browsers I think Opera’s fonts are the best.
          And Opera doesn’t use nspluginwrapper.

For a lot of Linux users, Opera is not even an option since it’s proprietary.

Well I am sure Stallman wouldn’t have a need for Adobe Air either. :D

            You’re kidding me, right?

          • Apopas

If you don’t understand that a lot of Linux users have a preference towards free software just like the operating system they use, then you must be kidding us…

          • Anonymous

Then they wouldn’t use AIR or Flash.

          • Apopas

That’s why they started gnash and lightspark as a Free implementation of Adobe’s flash plus they created html5 as a new technology to minimize the need of flash around the web.
Also is always a good thing to live in reality. Is a different thing to use proprietary software in cases where the Free software isn’t yet capable enough and totally different to use proprietary software when we have great Free (as in Freedom) options.
I admit that Opera is a good browser but it’s proprietary while Chrome and Firefox are good browsers too and both Free, so instead of choosing the non-free option why not try to help the developers of the other two by using their software and giving feedback and opinionsto make them even better?

            I absolutely love Opera’s fonts.

Maybe you haven’t used Opera in a while. It’s awesome now :)

I’ve tried the latest, in fact, I found it to be worse than 9.6, which was a pretty good browser.

Like said below, Opera’s fonts are beautiful. And Opera doesn’t even use nspluginwrapper, so maybe you could give the source you got that from? :)

Excellent! I can now install the Twitter ‘command centre’ that is Tweetdeck and iPlayer :) One thing I was missing from switching from Windows.

    Thank you very much!

I’ve never heard Tweetdeck called ‘command centre’ before but I’m so goign to adopt that xD

Because the .deb provided by Adobe is ONLY for 32bit users, this guide is for 64bit users and using the .bin is far quicker than force-installing the .deb.

So does this work if you have the 64 bit flash installed?

      Of course.

The last time I installed these libs for Air, it broke Chrome. Can anyone confirm whether this is still the case?
    Cheers.

Hell yeah! Thanks for the tutorial, I can finally use TweetDeck on linux.

  • Ryan

For the people who very rightly want to only install programs via deb packages, you should mention that the .bin installer actually installs a package that can be removed by the system package manager (at least on Ubuntu).
