The first public release of GNOME’s new ‘SeedKit‘ library and viewer has been released.

Seedkit allows developers to build and integrate web technologies such as HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript into their applications, creating entirely native, but web technology based, interfaces that have equal integration with the GNOME desktop as any other application.

“Alternatively a developer of an existing GTK+ application can embed a SeedKit view within the current interface.” the announcement on the GNOME mailing list states.

The kit, it is hoped, will lower the ‘entry barrier of Gnome development to web developers’ making the Gnome platform a more attractive proposition. “Mash-ups of web content/services and local data and behaviour could become a huge opportunity.”

SeedKit library and viewer can be downloaded via the mailing list announcement where build requirements are also listed.
