I don’t think d0od writes there. It is handled by someone else.

While you’re at it, throw a GNU/Linux vs. Linux poll as well. :)

        • http://twitter.com/kmetamorphosis Bertel King

GNU/Linux is most commonly referred to as just Linux. openSUSE on the other hand, well, just look at how it’s written in the screenshot d0od posted…

I used to be a real OpenSUSE fan back in the day but this distro still feels like it’s not been updated since about 6 years ago.The installer is pretty bad, it doesn’t even come close to Ubuntu’s or Kubuntu’s slick installer(Even Fedora looks better and is more simple).

The package management is slow and their servers are so damn slow is crazy. Who wants to change mirrors manually?

Also the same old GNOME bugs. Nautilus doesn’t remember it’s size or position, AGAIN! I’ve always liked the default layout though, the Slab menu is nice but after 9 months of development, I don’t really see what they have to show for it.

    • http://orkutcidio.deliriocoletivo.org Peterson Espaçoporto

Their servers are REALLY slow. Really. I really wonder how the hell they manage them.

However, their installer looks nice, me thinks — you just have to know what you’re doing, i.e not very simple.

      • http://twitter.com/kmetamorphosis Bertel King

I’ve had varying luck with them. For the most part, I’d say they were usually fast the few times I’ve used them.

    • Seventh Reign

I havent used openSUSE in about a year, but I always considered their installer (Atleast the full DVD version) one of the most beautiful of all installers. Atleast visually. As for its actual usability. Thats another story.

Their version of the Slab menu however is the 2nd worst menu system in operating system history. #1 being Gnome-Shell.

      • thatguy

I disagree, Gnome-Shell is awesome and the slab menu is decent… not great tho

        • Seventh Reign

They’re both ok if you use Favorites. The problem is they both open “All Applications” in a completely separate window. When you use 20 different apps daily, favorites arent enough.MintMenu, Cardapio, and Gnomenu are all so much better.

          • Anonymous

Yeah but the Slab was actually tested on real people with a usability study, just like the Kickoff menu in KDE4, so they’re proven. Geeks don’t like them, no surprise there. :)Slab is a lot older than the menus you say and was introduced in SLED 10.

          • Seventh Reign

Both openSUSE’s Slab menu and KDE4′s kickoff menu have been the subject of major hate (especially Kde4′s), so I find that study to be a bit flawed.

Tho I dont mind KDE4′s menu. Its a tad slow sometimes, but it doesnt need to open a seperate window to find the rest of my apps.

          • Anonymous

Yeah because they’re geeks, not average Joe users who know nothing about computers. Power users don’t like simple stuff like that and why Linux users generally hate anything Start Menu like.Geeks think they know better but they don’t because that’s why Linux is harder than other OS’s. Linux geeks don’t design for the average Joe computer user, so it takes something like Ubuntu to see that, which is designed for new computer users or Windows users.

          • thatguy

I think opening a separate window feels faster then going through menus, especially if you don’t know what category a certain program is in

Mintmenu, Cardapio and Gnomenu is really just like kickoff with a diffrent layout for things (and a quicker way to get to certain folders) but I mean they’re all pretty much the same.

Also worth noting is that Mac only has its dock for quick launching, if it’s not in the dock you have to go to the applications in finder.

          • daas88

I really like kde4′s menu. It’s one of my favorites, although I used to confuse a lot the shutdown and logout tab with the shutdown button, I guess I was too accustomed to gnome ^^

    • Legion

Spoken by someone who doesn’t have a clue what they are talking about. The installer is one of the best out there, package management is super fast and very well integrated with numerous functions. And no-one has to change mirrors manually. Numpty!!

      • Anonymous

It’s just my view of the installer. I’ve used this distro since 8.2 so I know about it. 11.3 is an improvement but the installer still has the old qt3 Win98 look on some of the windows that come and it looks like Windows XP in regard to layout.

Package management is pretty fast, butit has to wait to do the usual suseconfig every time and opensuse’s servers are slow with regular pausing.

this is a Ubuntu Bloq ???? Why Post Open Suse

LOL I was wondering the same thing, but d0od can post wth he wants :-)

Suse is terrible, it doesn’t even support ppa, how are we gonna keep track of software updates?

    • Anonymous

openSUSE has a package manager called yast, which handles software updates, the same way apt does in Ubuntu.

      • http://thealphanerd.wordpress.com/ Calvin

also, we have build services, which are PPAs on steroids. They build Ubuntu, Fedora, and Debian packages too.

    • Dragonbite

Just about every Linux distro these days have some sort of package manager. If you take about 60 seconds to look through the site you would run across a mention of Yast, and numerous repositories you can subscribe to.

Fedora doesn’t support ppa either, does that mean they suck too? How about Arch? Gentoo? Puppy? Sabayon? Slackware? CentOS? PCLinuxOS? Mandriva? Android? etc. etc. etc.?

  • Dusten B.

Maybe someday I’ll give suse a try, just to see, but there is nothing that I’ve ever needed to do that I could do easily in Debian/Ubuntu.

    • Anonymous

I really wouldn’t bother, Suse is shit, and their forum is a fucking joke.

      • http://twitter.com/kmetamorphosis Bertel King

I actually find their forum to be very helpful.

      • BrownieCat

i don’t think you know what you’re talking about. Have you even tried openSuse 11.3 ???? And their forums are very helpful from what I’ve seen.

    Beautiful artwork!

    • http://twitter.com/kmetamorphosis Bertel King

I think openSUSE regularly comes out with the best artwork. Kudos to its design teams.

  • http://twitter.com/shishimaru1000 Salvatore Cresce

My first distro before i changed definitely to Ubuntu. Not bad,but that’s not for me.

    • Anonymous

the same for me, after years of SuSE now 2 year on Kubuntu and now Ubuntu. Never go back.
example the Ubuntu ATI install is so much better, on OpenSUSE i usual end up with one cursor blinking. and so one, after installing Ubuntu no (big) problems anymore.

  • http://twitter.com/shishimaru1000 Salvatore Cresce

I tried it and this is the first distro (well, versione 11.1 and 11.2 work well) to have problem with wi-fi and touchpad. But the first problem I could solve with the konsole. I should say that is very simple to understand if you’ve used Ubuntu before, and the installer is fucking professional. KDE is super-integrated.
But I can’t go away from Lucid; maybe if I had Karmic I could think about trying OpenSUSE for more time!

  • Lexitius

Open Suse is a Fat Dist… i dont like this make me remember Windows Vista ….. uururgrggggg
