New apps land in the Meerkat software centre

The Ubuntu Software Centre store front in Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha has really started to flesh out, with an update today adding in a roster of application to the ‘New apps’ section.

The apps listed within the department are varied but, for the most, there is nothing to shout loudly about.

Still, it’s nice to see this until-now sparse area begin to stack its shelves with goodies.

I think someone should fill the space at the bottom with something.

Why? It would be much better to spread out and enlarge the other elements.

Hmm.. we’ll see. It’s not like its finished development yet :)

Adverts/Sponsors? Now that would be controversial but would generate an income stream for Canonical.

On second thoughts this seems guaranteed to happen, just in the form of using the space to promote paid for apps when they are introduced. And if canonical takes a share of each transaction then this space wouldn’t even have to be paid for adverts as such, as a simple top 5 paid for apps list would suffice.

At the moment, I think that space is there because it’s the left over screen-estate from when they scaled it down to fit on a netbook. They’ve only just fixed it so the whole thing fits in one screen on the netbook edition on this update.

It should auto detect your screen size and the decide to make that stuff in a side bar as apposed to at the bottom there accordingly. I say don’t make one design fit around everything, make two layouts and let the person choose (or choose for them by option)

Nice ! but still lacks some “shine” on the eyes… let’s wait for final release

I concur, it is a bit bland and if you’re already in the process of installing an application it becomes very slow to add other installs to the process queue.

    Nice!

I dont mean to sound too negative, but to me it looks like a kids application….

Seems Ubuntu devs are doing it a bit too basic sometimes. :)

I agree, they still haven’t added important info like app download size, and it shows very little info when installing the app

In the screenshot, it says “Ubuntu Software Centre”, not Ubuntu Software Centre “store” and the new sections is called “What’s New”, not ‘New apps’, as quoted. They haven’t stooped to Apple’s level yet with american slang terms for shops and programmes.
