During the Lucid cycle default Ubuntu file-manager Nautilus added a thick white border around the display of file thumbnails.

At the time this was considered an improvement by most. Several months on and, well, many users have tired of the ‘sticker style’ effect it resembles.

The very ace Kyle Baker tipped us off to a neat little hack he devised for improving the look of said borders in Nautilus 2.30. Kiss goodbye to the white lines and say hello to a neat looking drop shadow.

To install, follow this guide:

  2. sudo mv thumbnailframe.png /usr/share/pixmaps/nautilus/thumbnail_frame.png
  3. killall nautilus
