Auto-update to the latest Dropbox Experimental builds with dbupdater

DropBox users who like to live on the bleeding edge using the latest experimental builds with the latest features probably find the checking, downloading and installation of every new build a little bit of a chore.

Cue Dusten Barker and his super ace automatic script which automates the entire process for you – checking, downloading correct build and notifying you that updates are ready. It also, for tweak fans out there, preserves any custom DropBox icons you may have installed!

€œThis script will check for available updates, download the file for the proper architecture, and installs it for you while preserving any custom (mono!) icons you may be using.€ Dusten told us.

The script also comes with a 'downgrade' function so if an experimental build is giving you a headache you can easily and painlessly revert to an older version.

The best way to use the script is to add the dbupdater repository. Add the following to your Software Sources in the System > Administration sub-menu

Be sure to add the key: -

Now simply run: -

  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install dbupdate

Installing it this way both sets it to check and update automatically. To control it manually you instead download the Script

Extract and run manually from the terminal.

dbupdate can also be used via the command line

    Will this work with Ubuntu 10.10?

      The repo doesn’t work in Maverick for reasons unknown, but the script itself does. It is essentially bug free, and is therefore not updated very frequently any more.

      You can find packages for dbupdate here:

    This doesn’t work anymore. I tried to add it now but get an error.
    If I click any of the links here to dropbox I get:

    Oops! (404)

      The repo is busted for Maverick, and unfortunately Joey hard-linked a certain version of the script instead of the page that it could be found on. Older versions of the script get moved to an archive, and only the latest is available in that folder.

      This thread always links against the latest version (script or deb/rpm packages)
