The whole indicator approach is based on wrong assumption, it’s nothing new here. Mark S. really needs to decrease his ego.

â€œBecause a widget is either on your desktop and covered by a window, on top of your windows bothering you, or in a widget layer that requires a key press to view while an indicator is always right there on the panel just waiting for you quietly as it displays.â€

That’s a big design decision to base on a false assumption.

When the Indicator Applet is on a panel with “autohide” set, it requires a keypress or mouse movement to display.

By contrast, I have a discrete cairo-clock hovering on top of my terminal window at the top-right corner (where nothing important is ever shown), and it manages to be more “just waiting quietly” than anything on the panel (including the panel’s clock, which isn’t very useful for keeping track of time because it’s hidden)..

Disabling autohide for a panel makes everything on the panel clutter the display, and takes away from already limited display area to concentrate on work, especially on a widescreen small notebook. (Vertical panels are a disaster, not an option).

To rub it in, you can have multiple panels where it’s convenient, and put different applets into them. But you can’t have multiple Indicator Applets – everything has to go into one place on the screen. Which, if you care about clutter, will be autohidden because there’s too much info in the Indicator which you can’t selectively hide.
