UDS-M: Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition default applications: No significant change from Lucid

image

The Default Application Selection for Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition was today discussed at the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Belgium – and threw up a few surprises!

  • Chromium is to become the default browser for Ubuntu Netbook Edition – at least until Alpha 3!
  • Evolution Express – the successor to the Anjal interface – was seriously considered for inclusion. Final decision rejected this in favour of Evolution with a few tweaks.
  • OpenOffice remains the default office software, although Zoho webapps got an honourable mention.
  • ‘Megoo Media Player’ (formerly known as ‘Cubano’ for Banshee), XBMC & Moovida were all suggested as media player replacements for the Netbook edition. Issues were raised about ensuring the UbuntuOne Music Store works for users, with no formal decision made. Meego certainly sits as the front-runner in this case, but only testing, evaluation and time will tell…
  • The image application will be the same as that of the desktop, most likely Shotwell.

I have been using the current development version of gthumb and this next release is going to rock. At least it doesn’t use a database to import all your pictures. This whole database idea for this task is flawed…

No different then a music player…

Pretty good changes, although Anjal would be appreciated. Also Midori would be a better choice than Chromium, but unless WebkitGTK+ resolves its Java issues, it’s not possible. Java -> Internet Banking (and stability of Midori’s testing versions) is the only thing which prevents me from deleting FF…

I’m not sure about the music player suggestions though… Never heard of ‘MeeGo Media Player’, but if it is just a Banshee frontend, we’d better stick w/ Rhythmbox.

I’d really like to try Evolution Express or Anjal – do you know if there’s an easy way to do it? The dated pages I’ve found talk of needing a patched Evolution and installing from source – not something I’m comfortable with. Any ideas? Thanks!

EDIT – it’s packaged in Lucid universe

Chromium by default? Awesome. They really should do that in the desktop edition too, and throw out the slow, monolithic, wheel-reinventing Mozilla code.

Get rid of open office ! It just doesn’t belong on a netbook – go for web based office apps….

and if Banshee joins the ranks on the UNE side, what sense is left in keeping Rhythmbox for the desktop.

I’ve been waiting for this for years.

i second that. banshee has the simplicity of rhythmbox plus it can manage videos through library. banshee should replace rhythmbox

I’m looking forward to UNE, the new interface is just awesome! I hope Chromium makes it. It’s better than FF in many aspects for UNE.
