How to disable the Opera tray icon

Whenever we feature Opera in a post there is one question that inevitably crops up:

How do you disable the Opera tray icon?

It’s actually really simple and quite why Opera don’t let users tweak this via one of the copious preferences/settings/options/appearance dialogues they have i’ am ignorant of, but here is the 3-step guide for disabling the Opera tray icon in Ubuntu (or any OS)

  • Type ‘opera:config” in the URL bar and hit enter/return
  • Search for ‘tray’ in the search bar (or manually go to ‘userprefs’)
  • Uncheck ‘show tray icon’.

Happy days!
