Add Liferea feed reader to the Ubuntu messaging menu

Users of desktop feed-reading application Liferea can be alerted to new RSS updates via the Ubuntu Messaging Menu thanks to a patch by the very cool Maia Kozheva.

Download

The patch is due to go upstream but for the time being you can install Liferea from the following .debs, available from Maia's PPA.

First install this .deb: liferea-data_1.7.4-2~llfsyncfix1+sikon6_all.deb

Now choose the appropriate .deb for your system:

This would make the messaging menu go boom in my case. Too many subscription that update with more than 10 new things per day. Or can it be somehow configured to only show the total new items instead of listing every updated source?

      Nice thing tho’.

I gave Liferea a go because Google Chrome (and Google Reader) can’t handle Unicode properly; at least it doesn’t handle Devanagiri (I’m a non-native English). But this thing is damn slow! When I press ‘update all feeds’, I hangs for ever. I ended up uninstalling the beast.

By the way, i couldn’t find a better reader than Google Readar yet … even rssowl has some nasty bugs and is slow sometimes. Never had a problem with Google Reader … but i don’t like to give Google information about what i read.

I’m with you, there is nothing better than Google Reader, and to be honest I care less about Google knowing my reading habits. The only problem that I have with GR in Ubuntu is that it cannot handle Unicode properly. It is just in Linux version of GR; it works just fine with Windows though.

I read देवनागरी in google reader on linux without difficulties (also 中文 and 日語), using chromium, FF *or* Opera… What do you mean by the “Linux version of GR” – are you using some desktop app I’m not aware of?

I read devanagari in google reader on linux without difficulties (also Chinese), using chromium, FF *or* Opera… (disappointingly, though, disqus chokes badly on devanaagarii script, chinese characters, and even the appropriate diacritic marks to render devanaagarii properly in latin script!)

you can get a *fast* Liferea by installing this patched version:sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bojo42/lifereasudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install lifereasee https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lifer…You will loose Indicator applet integration though

Yes you are right. As soon as you have some more feeds, it gets really slow and hangs. I talked to the developer one or two years ago and he confirmed it and said he didn’t had time to fix and improve it :(

If you have some more feeds, you can create a ‘global’ directory. Then, you will see only the directory name in your Ubuntu’s Message Menu.

      Bye bye Google Reader! Thx!

Sorry for being off-topic, but i’d like to know what’s the interface font you’re using. I’ve tried both droid sans and luxi sans, but this one is the most mac like i’ve seen so far :)
      Thanks

      Great!!

I gave it a try and I tend to have loads of unread articles littered all over my feeds. That meant the envelope was constantly green – not really an indicator applet any more.

While I see the point of having Liferea in the indiicator aoolet, I don’t think it should make the envelope green for blog posts waiting to be read. I hate to bruise any egos out there but they aren’t as important to me as IM’s are.

I hope it will not be so trigger happy once it is ready to go. If so, it will be great.

I hoped a PPA or something like this; Iḿ not untrusting of the .debs, juts by comodity…

      JaD!

What’s up with Ubuntu 10.10 messaging menu support for liferea? Isn’t working anymore, any alternative PPA?
