Benjamin Humphrey, leader of the the Ubuntu Manual project (and fellow OMG! writer), has announced that the project will be launching two new ‘Quickstart’ booklets in time for the October release of Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.

“…we will be releasing some new materials for Ubuntu 10.10, including two variants of an Ubuntu Quickstart booklet designed for LoCo teams to print and use at events as well as a version optimized for inclusion on the Ubuntu CD.”

Also announced were plans for a “100% error free” 2nd edition of the titular project, due July this year.

This would be great news if they hadn’t got their naming conventions all wrong. I contacted them a while ago to suggest that calling a thick deadtree book ‘Getting Started with Ubuntu’ was a mistake. It would simply seem intimidating and give the wrong impression… “I need to read 500 pages just to get started?”.

If their big 500 page dead tree book is ‘Getting Started’ then what is their little quickstart document going to be called? IMO this new development only goes to prove their initial naming choice was a poor one, just as I thought it was.

That issue aside, I think a quick start guide is exactly what the community needs. Its great that we now have a big thick manual where you can look up anything you might need, but a quick, easy to read document is going to do more to persuade switchers to switch.

PS I know the book isnt actually 500 pages :-P

You have a valid point and there’s no guarantee the title will stay the same for 10.10 :)

d00d, I haven’t commented on anything in a while and I think I now know why. I was staring at the front page this morning, and it’s just too bright and sterile now. I really used to like this blog because it was so perky and amature-ish (in a good way). I don’t know, I just don’t find myself looking forward to coming here as much as I used to.

      Oh noes! :(

The site has become a bit “squarer” (in many ways) the last few weeks and I can’t settle on a wallpaper (hence currently using ubuntu brand dots.

I want to introduce a rotating header (changes on every refresh) and some how fudge a stuffed toy back into proceedings..

I have the perfect stuffed toy.
