stunning ubuntu logo panel icon coming to desktop?

New panel icon

The screenshot above was sent to me by OMG! reader Dave and shows the new Ubuntu logo finally being used within Ubuntu itself.

The Netbook Edition/Remix has typically been the first to show off some theme changes: during the Karmic cycle the brown-ized Human theme was say in the netbook edition for a good week or so prior to the its bigger desktop counterpart.

It’s pretty slick looking though, dontcha' think?

Quite cool. I reckon it’d be nicer if the left over bits of the panel on the left of the logo were transparent though. Sort of creating a rounded end to the panel.

I used to always use UNR. But I just grew sick of it. I just run full ubuntu on my netbook now just with some UNR packages installed with it for “optimization”.

    Pretty neat.

Might consider trying it if I get the time.

Now that I’m thinking about it, I wish you could put the left sidebar on the bottom or right side or something. Or maybe like an autohide, and eliminate the center icons.. or something. Just wish it was a little more customizable.

    • Knef

True. The Netbook Launcher always seems a little off to me, maybe it’s because the panel is not transparent like the rest of the interface, or because the first left bottom is a little lower than the program window… Maybe I have been spoiled by the rest of the system, but if I can’t tweak it properly I can’t bring myself to use it.

At first I thought the COF isn’t centered but that’s an optical illusion at thus small sizes – a bad one.

    • Anonymous

I agree. I like the idea of doing something extra to separate the identity of the logo from the rest of the panel icons, but the COF just doesn’t look right when inside a circle like that.

great idea, but not done properly. it looks really out of place.

It’s not showing for me. I have the latest updates, and since the archive is now frozen for Beta 2, this won’t happen for quite some time.

BTW: d0od, you can test Ubuntu UNE as well by installing the package ubuntu-netbook. Then you just have to select it when you log in. ;)

      • http://www.1916home.net/ 1916home

it feels out of place on a regular desktop though. And I had problems with all my boxes opening up full screen, etc. it was a pain so i removed it off my desktop.

It does look out of place… when a window is maximized the red close button would be right next to the similarly colored Ubuntu logo.

IMO it should remain colorless so it wouldn’t be confused with the red close button.

    • http://ooh-ubuntu.blogspot.com/ sean

when maximised U.B.E uses maximus and windows picker applet so the the title bar is merged with the top panel, so it will only show the go-home applet and the window picker applet which only gives the option to close the window unless you double click the title…

No Confusion with accedently clicking the go-home applet instead of close

      • Paul

What I meant was, implementing this particular Ubuntu logo on 10.04 desktop version.

The close button is the leftmost of the window controls, and with maximized windows it’ll be positioned right next to the Ubuntu logo. That’s where the confusion might lie.

Right, but if they add the button to the ubuntu desktop edition, then you will have 2 similar icons there. Like this (I made it with gimp): http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/7970/pantallazo01.jpg

IMO, it doesn’t look good at all. But it’s not so bad in the netbook edition.

Looks too large for the panel and the colour out of place to me.

Oh also I got a new netbook remix interface with some nice sliding animations when switching between sections. Didn’t occur to me to take a screenshot, and it disappeared with the next update as well.

Personally, Im not a big fan of it yet. I like the logo matching the other icons on the taskbar. This orange one almost looks like the other netbook app icons up on the top bar and could be confusing.

My biggest gripe with the netbook edition:

    - cant change the app icons
    - cant rearrange the fave icons order

    • jaezcurra

Launch the Configuration Editor. Then, apps>netbook-launcher>favorites. You can rearrange the icons.

I don’t know if this would be the case in the desktop version as well, but I really like having separate entries for Applications, Places, and System. Even if it’s only replacing the current icon, I liked the previous one much, much better. This looks extremely out of place, and doesn’t fit at all with all the other new icons they’ve added (which look fantastic).

Oh well, we’ll see what happens.

The desktop version would still have all three menus. The UNE, to save space, uses the Ubuntu logo as a “go home” applet which takes you back to the main screen.

That’s what I figured. What I was a tiny bit worried about is that they would replace the current Ubuntu icon that’s sitting next to the three menues with this new one, since this new one doesn’t fit in with the rest of the icons at all.

Doesn’t this break the Ubuntu-monochrome icon set??

    • http://cldx.blogspot.com/ Joern Konopka

How would it break it? Usually the File “distributor-logo.svg” (which is used for the Menu) is a syslink to “start-here.svg”, now you just would have to make it a standalone File and Bingo ^^, all other Logos would remain the same. Of course it might break some other Icons but thats actually an issue of having the Distributor Logo in Places it shouldnt be used in or vice versa (which is not the Users Fault of course).

EDIT: Sorry seems its actually not the distributor-logo.svg anymore they are using, its the start-here.svg now.

Maybe you meant it would break the overall appearance which is right, but thats a matter of taste i guess.

Dont like that at all … first of all its lopsided like the icons in the installer slideshow were originally, and #2 the color is hideous and doesnt belong at all.

The rest of the desktop is all gradient-y with the drab purple/gray/white. It looks out of place.

  • http://jamesgecko.com/ James

“It’s pretty slick looking though, dontcha’ think?”

No, not really. The new icon clashes with the rest of the desktop.

  • That guy

Oh yeah, I think that there’s not enough orange, it should be kinda like on the new site that has an orange bar at the top.

I think it looks a bit misplaced. I liked the monochrome icon better actually. :/

  • http://dylantaylor.wordpress.com/ aliendude5300

It looks better in plain white. I agree that it looks out of place. It needs to fit in with the other icons better.
