How are you updating to Lucid Lynx?

So, here we are, the night before. How will you be moving on to Lucid Lynx? Just an update from repository? Are you on the Release Candidate already? Will you be downloading a torrent as soon as it goes up? Staying up to start the download? Waiting a few weeks for the CD to ship and bugs to get worked out?
Well, lets have a poll!
Ps: Sorry the poll is in flash; as soon as I can get it to embed correctly in Javascript, it will change.

where I can look for the torrent once its released?

    • http://twitter.com/followthesam Sam Weston

http://torrent.ubuntu.com:6969/ or you can get it straight from the ubuntu.com download page.

I’ll be waiting a bit and doing a clean install. I’m reluctant to do anything with my 9.10 install so perfectly customised to my needs and I can’t justify spending the time fixing things if an upgrade breaks things. I wish I wasn’t so busy at the moment but I’m very excited about the new releases anyway :D

      • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

So many times i’ve upgraded and been like “dang. this doesn’t feel like it used to.”

      • Anonymous

i fairly habitually do my first upgrade on a separate partition so I can be sure I don’t forget to bring over any settings.

  • http://twitter.com/explodingwalrus Carl Draper

I’m gonna upgrade my main desktop from 9.10, upgrading 3 of my servers from 8.0.4 to 10.0.4, clean install on two other desktops and a possible fresh install of Xubuntu 10.0.4 on my laptop. one of my servers is staying on 8.0.4 as later versions of deluge do not have a schedule plugin!

    • Anonymous

holy cow! thats a lot of computers.

I did a clean install of the RC on a few computers already. If you back up the home folder to a USB, it’s quite simple, especially when the PPA system allows you to use the same line for different versions of Ubuntu.

I find doing that back up and doing a fresh install much easier to handle than running an update from a CD/USB drive/update manager, for some reason. I guess I’ve just had issues upgrading before, so I don’t trust upgrades to give me a good system anymore. I’ll probably try it the traditional way on one or two setups where it would be a pain to install a new version from scratch due to the customizations…. but I dunno’ if I’ll be satisfied with it.

    • Anonymous

clean installs are great for just a fresh feeling. i’ll probably do two or three of them in the next month. :D but thats cause I install and remove a lot of stuff.

  • http://twitter.com/bustible Jon

I’ll be upgrading fresh. I’ve completely screwed up my copy of Ubuntu by breaking the software index as I was playing Supertux. It won’t be very hard, though, since I don’t have much software and any software I do have is easy to set back to my original conf.

  • David Raid

Always a clean install for me, lets me have the system the way it was intended without any bugs caused by existing applications or tweaks on my part.

  • Anonymous

    clean install ftw

    • Anonymous

Totally agree, I’ve had the beta running as a live CD on my test machine for a while but not actually committed anything to the HDD. Will do a fresh install over the weekend with the full blown released LTS version – CANNY WAIT!

  • No_Asylum

I’ll be Waiting for Mint 9, since Ubuntu 10.04 is complete and total garbage.

    • Anonymous

Yes, you wait for Mint 9…better still, install Vista. I’ve heard it’s great :¬/

    • Anonymous

then why are you on an Ubuntu site?

    • http://cldx.blogspot.com/ Joern Konopka

What is it with the hatred amongst Users of different Distros? I hate this retarded “Our features are cooler than yours” Attitude…we should be learning from each other instead of fighting over whos got the better UI….in the end were all sitting on a Terminal you know…

    • http://wakoopa.com/xfact XFACT

I think you should better check out Ubuntu manual because if 10.04 is garbage for you then sure you don’t know how to use it up…

  • Adam

Clean install + already on RC. Separate /home is great. And 10.04 is garbage…. because? It works really nicely for me. I don’t think adding a green theme makes it much different.

    • Anonymous

yeah for separate /home partition! makes it so easy.

  • http://bededog.myopenid.com/ bededog

I update using the update manager as it’s the easiest way to update. I do make sure to change to a mirror server instead of the main Ubuntu server so I get decent download speeds as well. Although I’m going to be fairly busy tomorrow so it might just have to wait until Friday.

  • http://bootlog.com Jenny

Clean install, as always. I love it, and it gives me a chance to do some spring cleaning (all those apps I download to try and don’t end up using frequently, or multiple apps that perform a similar function that I download so that I can try them all before choosing) :) I have a CD on the way with a mag, so I’ll wait for that.

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

I know just what you mean and every fresh install I make a vow that i won’t install stuff i know i won’t use… (6 months down the line i’m always in the same position.) xD

  • http://wakoopa.com/xfact XFACT

I suggest kind of same like idea… BTW I’ll wait patiently wait for CD to reach my door step :)

  • zykcim

my jaunty 9.04 work fine, why upgrade? for what?!?

    • Anonymous

faster boot? new kernels? gnome updates? nautilus 2.30?

  • Anonymous

I upgraded in an earlier beta, but then during an upgrade the system stopped responded, at which point I attempted a reboot and wasn’t able to load the OS. So, as I was operating under time constraints, I did a reinstall. Now everything is operating almost as it’s supposed to but I can’t get visual effects up. They worked in Karmic and I might attempt a second clean install since at this point I haven’t accumulated much data and wouldn’t mind parting with it if troubleshooting is fruitless.

    • Anonymous

on your next install, you might consider separating out 2 partitions: 1 10 or 15 gig partition and 1 with the rest of your disk, and mount / to the small one, and home to the big one. that way your data stays put when you reinstall.

      • Anonymous

Yes that is good advice. I had a custom partition scheme on my last install but when I ran into trouble before this current install, I was going out of town hours later and chose not to take the time to do things in the best way in the name of saving time heh
I always like to plan painstakingly before i do my own partitioning.

        • Anonymous

ha, yeah. me too. I’ve got like 5 partitions on my portable, splitting 500 gigs so that I can have my primary install, primary home, but with a back up install (just in case I break something, and I can spare the 12 gigs) and a little tiny windows 7, in case I’m on the road and need a windows only app, and then a little tiny tiny area for swapping files to 7.

  • http://twitter.com/kakty3 Sergey Demurin

I’ve just upgraded from 9.10 to RC and I’m so happy! 10.04 fixed the problem with my Acer 1410, and now I love Ubuntu more then ever.

  • http://www.dracirate.com/ Dracirate

    Clean install always

  • Anonymous

    dist-upgrade on one machine
    standard upgrade on my desktop
probably clean install on laptop with partition resizing.

  • http://photos.rickscheibner.net Rick

RC for me, although I probably should back up my files and go for a clean install at some point.

  • http://twitter.com/caseyjp11 Casey J. Peter

My method of upgrading? sudo pacman -Syu heh heh

Its funny. This cycle (10.04) I started getting wandering eye after five+ years of ubuntu. I think the tooltips fiasco, further Ayatana snootiness regarding UI, the move to ply-gag-mouth (yes I’m an nvidia proprietary kinda guy) as well as Arch running the SAME STUFF 300 megabytes of ram LIGHTER has started me down another path.

I’m still testing and looking at Ubuntu, but in the last few weeks I’ve spent more and more time in the Arch partition, and funnily enough…I’m not missing Macbuntu….er…Ubuntu much at all. I think getting the hang of AUR has eased up the PPA convenience of keeping things like mplayer/smplayer and vlc fixed and current, and the rolling release has more up to date software without the hassles of “upgrade and pray” that the six month cycle brings.)

No knock really ubuntu…its probably my level of expertise that is leaving the distro behind, but having my OS really be MY OS is something running ubuntu has been less and less of the last year or so.

My 2 cents anyway. Not a flame…just personal observation.

    Oh yeah…RC > final for 10.04.

    • Anonymous

Ever heard about Debian? There is a lot more precompiled software for debian than for Arch and it’s not Mac wannabe …

      • Yi Sun-sin

And it’s not rolling release, and the software in the stable repository is so incredibly old, and they even need to make their own patch to some softwares because their incredibly old version is not even supported by upstream anymore, and they don’t keep things vanilla.

There is actually not so much difference between Ubuntu and Debian, set aside stuff like custom notifications, me-menu, indicator-menu, and the Ubuntu Software Center…
It is just that Debian use older version than Ubuntu, and do not come with a lot of pre-installed software. I’m not saying Debian is bad, I’m saying it is pretty different from ArchLinux.

        • Anonymous

You don’t have to use Debian stable version, you can use the one Ubuntu is based on.
And Arch linux stable is just as “stable” as debian unstable…

Anyway, I suggested Debian because it doesn’t have all the things you don’t like in ubuntu.

Plus you could try just installing ubuntu command line interface from ubuntu alternate CD and then all the packages you want.

          • Yi Sun-sin

«Anyway, I suggested Debian because it doesn’t have all the things you don’t like in ubuntu.»
Err, I guess you meant what Casey J. Peter don’t like.

Anyway, I plan to keep my dual-boot ArchLinux/Ubuntu as it is. I don’t see the point of installing Debian, or re-installing Ubuntu with less packages… I just like to use Arch, which allows me to install the new version of Gnome on the very same day it is declared stable by the Gnome team, and exactly as it was meant by the Gnome team, and to try each versions of Ubuntu (as it is meant to be used, I don’t see the point of an Ubuntu installation that doesn’t include the ubuntu-desktop package). Besides that, Arch allows me (well, forces me) to gain a better understanding on the way Linux work, and Ubuntu works great as a complementary OS if I ever break my ArchLinux. If you want to convince me that I should use Debian, you won’t succeed if you don’t show me it will bring me more, showing it can do just the same is not enough…

Installed at 10.04 B1, been updating from the update manager since then, and will tomorrow. Looking forward to it!

  • brypie

    I’m conflicted!

I’m going to download the torrent, so that I can do a clean install.

    What option do I choose????

    • Anonymous

ha. i actually set it so you can pick more then one, and tried to word them appropriately.

I have one PC running the RC, my test-box that has been current since Beta 1, The wifes computer will upgrade and the daughters will to. My laptop will stay with 9.10 till they get the graphics driver support sorted!

I am doing “sudo aptitude update and sudo aptitude safe-upgrade” in every 1 hour time :)

  • http://boniboyblue.wordpress.com/ Boni Boy Blue

I clean installed the RC and after finally fixing the Plymouth boot issue I got it working. It’s a straight upgrade for me. Hopefully, it will upgrade with no issues.

  • http://ayld.myopenid.com/ Ayld

my workhorse laptop has had Ubuntu continuously since 8.04, even during a brief CrunchBang interlude it stayed loyally there. I keep it clean and managed, and it’s still faster than it was on Windows five years ago. Will be upgrading manually overnight! :)

  • http://ayld.myopenid.com/ Ayld

Also, 9.10 was a big let-down in terms of stability. It took a long time for those problems to be ironed out. I hope the same has happened with the reported X-server bugs in the RC.

  • BrumsBanana

Choices are unrelated crap. When creating a poll ask one question and think about possible answers that make sense.

    • Anonymous

um, ok. I asked one question, and then i thought about the possible answers. What answers would you prefer? so far a couple thousand people seem to think that answers work well.

  • adi

that’s odd… I can select all the options how is that relevant to the poll?

    • Anonymous

some people are downloading the torrent, then doing a clean install. some are downloading the torrent but waiting in case of bugs. some are… lots of combinations.

  • http://www.displayblock.com/ Matt

I upgraded from Karmic halfway between Beta 2 and RC. It was stable enough by that point, and I’ve been doing daily updates since then.

  • Anonymous

I’ve been since 10.04 alpha 3 and I’ll stay here, updating as soon as updates appears.

  • Anonymous

I’m going to be updating via the update manager. Will be interesting since I installed 9.04 on a Toshiba Satellite, then traded laptops, put my hard drive into my Acer and it worked perfectly, then updated to 9.10 with no problems, now I’m going to see if I can update again with no problems.

Makes me wonder if I can keep going for years on an install that was actually performed on another computer, lol.

    • Anonymous

thats crazy! wow. those must be very compatible video cards and wireless.

So I wake up this morning, and because I’ve been patiently watching the “Coming Soon!” countdown, i knew today is the day when i can finally get my hands on 10.04. I boot up and log onto ubuntu.com, only to have that damn smiley face looking back at me. Where is the download?!?!

This is probably too late, but you might try switching servers to a local instead of the primary servers.
