Why Docky’s GMail Docklet Doesn’t currently work in Ubuntu 10.04

Although popular Dock application Docky is available in the repositories of Ubuntu 10.04 one of the most popular Docklets, for it, the GMail notifer docklet, doesn’t currently function in Lucid. Whilst entering your user credentials will result in a €œsuccessful validation€ response, the Docklet itself is not able to connect to the GMail servers.

Not Docky's fault

So what's the beef? The issue is not a bug or regression on the part of Docky or the Docklet itself but rather a change in GNOME 2.30 €“ specifically gnome-keyring-sharp. This issue is also affecting many Adobe Air applications, too.

Robert Dyer, in a comment on the bug report for this issue mentions: -

The workaround would be us storing your password in clear-text. So… no.

As a result of the change, the ability to suitably address the issue is out of the Docky developers hands.

Thankfully the issue should hopefully be addressed in time for Lucid according to comments on the bug report.

Being aware of this issue for now will hopefully save both the developers a slew of invalid/duplicate bug reports and users a lot of hair pulling wondering why it won't 'just' work.

Another reason not to use multiple layers/framework in programming!!!

Do you actually have any idea what you’re talking about? The shit storm that software would be in without the use of frameworks and layers is beyond imagination.

No, its another reason to learn what “beta” means. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=beta+software

Docky doesn’t work without compositing right? I don’t have the nvidia driver on, just nouvea and docky doesn’t start. I turned on composing through gnome/metacity and gnome do works. Will nouvea eventually be able to run docky?

    • Anonymous

Eventually? I’m pretty sure it will.
      Soon? Not sure.

If you can run metacity compositing I don’t see why you couldn’t run Docky.

      • Luis

        it just doesnt start

well it is a beta :P
no one goes into a beta expecting flawless computing!
or at least… no one with a sensible mind :/

I was wondering about this. Glad to know it wasn’t just me and looking forward to the fix.

Does the change in gnome-keyring-sharp mean I don’t have to input my password EVERY time I log in while using the Gmail Docklet ??

Read about it a few days ago. Good to see that is getting looked after. I’m starting to miss it

as usual another screw up by Gnome, and they waste all their time building redundant applications when they should focus on the components of the Gnome env.

Kupfer, a brilliant alternative to Gnome Do has just added Gmail and Twitter support. It has the same issues in the Lucid beta. Just have to play the waiting game I suppose
