The default wallpaper for Ubuntu 10.04 has been revealed: -

warty-final-ubuntu

Click to view it full sized.

If you’re wondering why it’s named warty-final-ubuntu.png, the developers explain: -

The wallpaper is named warty-final-ubuntu because we realised we can’t change the users gconf keys so we can’t update their wallpaper unless we keep the same name.

I like how you posted the source of this information.

I do really like the new style and such. And most of the times I am the first one to counter a “this is another Mac OS X rip off”. But I think it’s strange nobody has pointed out that these do look somewhat as the Mac OS X background: http://tuxlink.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/leopard_fondo_espacialwide.jpg . Both same colors and both spacy…

    • http://billishere.deviantart.com Billi

I pointed it out previously, but no one cared…again.
seems like we don’t give two sh*ts for losing our identity as linux users…now we are macdouchebag wannabes!

Are you freaking kidding me? This is as absurd as when apple sues a company for using an apple in a logo that looks nothing like the apple logo. So, leopard uses a wallpaper with a significant amount of purple, and they own the color??? The two things are nothing alike!!

In any case, the mac wallpaper is prettier….

        • http://billishere.deviantart.com Billi

the two things are not exactly alike. but…
when you combine all the new things that ubuntu has been putting out, including a mac like notification system, mac like monochrome top panel, and now the screenshots show the bottom panel hidden…make it look more mac like than ever. also the caption buttons are moved to the left…
the combo of all these changes does not make it look like a mac? what’s next? big detailed colourful icons?

          • Pablo Marchant

I certainly recognize the resemblance of the gtk theme and the metacity theme, but I think that throwing the wallpaper into the discussion of resemblance cause it has purple is a bit too much. Just want to keep the critics where they certainly are clear resemblances…

In any case, I like the new theme (not a fan though), but even though I change the human theme every time I install ubuntu, I think this turn could possibly make ubuntu lose part of its visual identity.

          • http://mpt.net.nz/ mpt

The other items are debatable, but Ubuntu does not have a “mac like notification system”.

          • http://billishere.deviantart.com Billi

well…like growl i guess. which is often used with mac osx. but yeah… it isn’t a mac-like notification system. my mistake.

          • http://www.martinsmucker.com Michael Martin-Smucker

@Billi, you forgot the fact that the new .doc (and related) document icons actually *use* the MSWord for Mac logo. The Gnome HIG advises against using application logos in document icons; I can only imagine how the writers of the HIG would feel about using icons of proprietary apps that don’t run on Linux in a Gnome icon set. I’m less concerned with similarities between the Mac look and the Ubuntu look; I’m much more concerned with the blatant rip-offs that have been popping up.

It’s true, though, that the new notification system is not a Mac copy. Its design is similar to the Growl design, but Growl is an open source project that just happens to run exclusively on Macs.

          • http://billishere.deviantart.com Billi

I hate blatant ripoffs. there is a sheer number of gtk themes on gnome-look.org that are analogs to aqua or aero. I’m cool with a few of these look alikes as long as they are made for the right intentions of making noobs feel at home. i’m ok with ports as well.. but i hate the 70% of the other stuff that frankly doesnt look original and looks like a bunch of uninspired poorly designed crap. deviantart however, seems to be a better source of more originality and quality work. ….and most of the stuff there should be taken as the source of inspiration for new designs for themes and the like.
as for the ms word icon: I never actually paid attention to that in the human theme. but i think its also like that in the elementary icon theme if i recall properly.
and yeah. growl just happens to be more popularly used on macs. so my mistake with that.

          • Anonymous

Mac-like notifications system? I guess you are referring to Growl notifications and that is a third-party developed program for OSX.

          • http://billishere.deviantart.com Billi

yeah my mistake on that. growl can also be used in linux, in fact, i used it once and found it to be a waste of my time. but yeah, i got accustomed to seeing growl paired with osx and therefore referred to it as a mac like notification system.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think it’s a Mac rip-off but I definitely see the similarity. I love the new “light” Ubuntu theme, but I’m not a fan of the new background. I don’t think it ties in to the “light” theme at all and I’m somewhat disappointed that this will be the default.

    • Anonymous

how is Ubuntu’s new wallpaper spacy? It has a lens flare effect and suddenly it’s spacy? I understand why you are worrying but really saying this wallpaper looks like OSx’s is stretching it too much.

    • http://www.google.com/profiles/105705293887826322118 aL3xa

      completely original… NOT!!!

That will be changed as soon as I install Lucid. I wish they did more ‘themed’ wallpapers like this : http://www.design-by-izo.com/2010/03/03/new-lucid-lynx-wallpaper/ I think they are fun.

It really sucks, especially the “whatevercolothatis” spot in the top, it’s like an application is notifying you something, except it is not.

    I don’t like it at all…

I allways switch to a photo right after install

why’s it called warty.. was this supposed to be out in ubuntu 5?

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

No, all of the default wallpapers since Warty have had to be called ‘warty’ because, well this quote explains it best: -

The wallpaper is named warty-final-ubuntu because we realized we can’t change the users gconf keys so we can’t update their wallpaper unless we keep the same name.

      • Anonymous

Thanks for the clarification! thats kind of funny though

      • http://www.martinsmucker.com Michael Martin-Smucker

Interesting. Is the plan just to call every default wallpaper warty… into the indefinite future? It seems like this could be fixed in the form of an update: rename warty-final-ubuntu to default-final-ubuntu and automatically update the gconf keys of all users who are using the default. Or is this a big privacy/security no-no?

  • Ernesto

Your polls always suck. You only give the 2 extreme opposites as choices.

    • Anonymous

      go somewhere will you

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

Most of our polls on here normally have about 17 options! It’s only the last two that have been Yes/No options – and that’s what a snap poll is about – it’s designed to gauge initial reactions; first impressions if you will. Etc.

      • http://www.martinsmucker.com Michael Martin-Smucker

I was going to say that I like the recent poll format. It’s fun to see what people’s initial reactions are when they’re only given two options. Nothing wishy-washy – you’ll either use it or you won’t, you either like it or you dont.

  • Mohan

I love the new wallpaper and welcome it with open arms. ;)

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

I much agree – i really like it!

  • Anonymous

I voted that I’d keep it, but I would only keep it for about a month before swapping it out for something from InterfaceLift!

It’s certainly better than the previous default backgrounds though.

  • kaysar

    I’ll be switching it ASAP
the colors aren’t my favorite colors its little bit girly

  • http://twitter.com/Nickedynick Nick Stringer

With the Human theme still in place, my desktop now looks like a Cadbury’s advert! Brilliant! :D

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

Hahaha!! That genuinely made me laugh out loud! Brilliant xD

      • http://twitter.com/Nickedynick Nick Stringer

I do my best! I was half expecting a drumming gorilla on shutdown…

        • Anonymous

That would be awesome! Maybe the screensaver could be some airport vehicles having a race…

  • Alexandr

wtf is it default? on a big screen it really sucks, too blury, seems like I am becoming blind

    • Anonymous

      i agree 100% !!

  • ddpquinn

There is a lot of discussion in these posts about Ubuntu’s “visual identity”. For the last 5 years ubuntu has been hands down one of the ugliest operating systems on the market. Everytime I try and show new users ubuntu, the first thing they say is how ugly it is (followed by asking if iTunes will work…).

Is this really a “visual identity” we should be trying to preserve?!

  • carl

My Acer Aspire One D250 is purple so I’ll keep that default. My Kodak zi8 is purple. I got the purple thing going all the way around now.

  • Nordlicht

Really like it. The only thing that is not that good are the a bit “choppy”-looking color-transitions…

  • AnonymousCoward

    this wallpaper is for girls

    • Anonymous

      lol :-) i agree 100%

    • insanelyapple

yeah? so what boys one should look like? a pair of silicone tits?

      • http://www.google.com/profiles/105705293887826322118 aL3xa

        eventually two pairs… make it a dozen…

    • Anonymous

So I’m a girl now? and violet is a color for girls only now?

  • Anonymous

I’m liking it very much but I want to see how it will appear over dual monitors.

  • http://www.thekiplingconspiracy.co.uk christiegrinham

Hardy Heron had the best wallpaper IMO

  • Zach

are you serious? What the hell is wrong with ubuntu. I mean, I had a little sympathy for the whole brown thing, but honestly, you should have known everyone hates brown. Ask any girl with brown eyes and they go “eww! they look like poop!”. But this is your alternative? copying mac only with even more PURPLE!!!!!. As much as I hate the distro, OpenSuse had a good solid theme. Go study it.

    • hugmyballs

OpenSuse’s theme is an ugly joke! If they should copy anyone, they should copy Apple, not Suse.

  • hugmyballs

Looks a bit like KDE’s default Oxygen/Air (?) wallpaper, but in purple instead of light blue.

  • Anonymous

    wtf *-_-* looks like ( merda ) …..

  • montini

so now it’s official? we have signed for 3-or-so years of using a mac-os clone?

    • Anonymous

So its official? To use ubuntu you have to sign a contract?

  • http://mastropino.deviantart.com/ MastroPino

    Awesome, I really like it!

  • Anonymous

    Beautiful!

  • http://blastfromthepast.se/ Tommy Brunn

This is… Meh. It’s not horrible, but it’s not good either. It looks like it was made in gimp in about 10 minutes. And lens flares? Seriously…? This would be a million times better, and it might be what I’m going to use when I install Lucid. http://www.flickr.com/photos/47414073@N07/4346369534/sizes/o/in/pool-556923@N24/

    • Anonymous

Yeah, the lens flares aren’t doing it for me. If they were aiming to look professional, they probably shouldn’t have designed something that I could have made after using photoshop for 3 minutes when i was 11.

  • pt

nice default weallpaper, it will look great on reviews and screenshots

  • Anonymous

I really like this wallpaper. What turns me off is the GTK+ theme..

  • Anonymous

I voted no, not because I don’t like the theme, it is quite good, but I always go for black / dark windows, and wallpapers, because I like the icons to stand out, and black never goes out of fashion. I love the dust in suspension wallpaper from Karmic! but have the black board one
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4190392/Firefox_wallpaper.png

Loved crunchbang for the black theme, problem with # wasthat they are always 2 releases behind

  • Robo

Is the language in the poll correct?
Should the third option be “I’m keeping my current wallpaper”?
At the moment there’s no negative option in the poll…

    • Anonymous

If its default in Lucid, the assumption is that you’ll either keep it, immediately change it, or uncertainly leave it.

  • Anonymous

Lets see, lets see… start with a purple background, add 3 lights and 9 lens flares… done!

  • Anonymous

Congratulations to whoever learned how to do lens flares. -.-

  • montini

me being a little bit dramatic doesn’t change the fact that ubuntu styling trends are obviously going to the macos yard. well, i’m kind’of disappointed they drop the orange way – I always liked it (still don’t understand why so many users hate it) – for me, the orange was the dessert, the warmth, the… africa, it was _ubuntu_ as the whole conception (i.e. in the original meaning of the word). this new way is… well, too cold, to plain, too… business. Well it’s just the feeling of the moment, let’s see how it ends on april 29.

  • Anonymous

    Too like MacOS X

  • Moin

It’s too similar with that of LinuxMint’s 8.0 & OpenSUSE’s 11.0 default wallpapers, the only difference is their color.

  • Simone

I strongly suggest you to read this link (and those written in that page) for a very interesting analysis, made by an expert, about the new brand:
    http://troy-sobotka.blogspot.com/2010/03/ubuntu-brand-identity-in-context.html

I like very much the new logo and colors, but this wallpaper is really ugly (IMHO!!)

  • http://www.google.com/profiles/105705293887826322118 aL3xa

Absolute rubbish! Looks like some noobs played with Photoshop… Background colour: purple, OK… Oh, gee, what’s this “Lens Flare” effect… Cool! Let’s do this again… Awesome… Behold, the new Ubuntu background!
    O_o
    An absolute disaster! Loath it!!!

  • http://twitter.com/NtynRuben Ruben Verhack

Besides my previous comment, I think the top-red-orange-light-thingy is quite misleading, it seems to be indicating something on my top panel. I also spot some color-banding on the left side, although I don’t have the best screen atm.

But, we’ve come a long way! No more running away from the default look.

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

I think that’s a great sentiment – it may not be the great leap everyone was expecting but it’s certainly stepping out on the right path.
