Simple GRUB Theming Script [Updated]

Bored with how GRUB looks? Well if you don’t have the nerves to try total boot pimper BURG, the following simple script will help beautify your boot.

The following simple script dolls up your GRUB menu with an Ubuntu-like appearance.

There are currently two styles to choose from – a ‘skin tone’ version that compliments Karmic suitably, or a Purple version designed for Lucid users.

  • Download one of the following scripts by MichealH

Normal version
Purple version

  • Give the script permission to ‘execute as a programme’ (Right click > properties > permissions)
  • Run it!

Hi, Is it possible to replace the picture Ubuntu-Eng.png with something else (for example the new purple desktop- naming it Ubuntu-Eng.png) in /usr/shared/images/grub, I’m a bit nervous of messing about with that kind of thing…
Thanks (p.s. I love this blog!)

I’d try it if I hadn’t just spent the last hour and a half fixing Grub after I broke it. I’ll admit that it was completely my fault though. Gotta stop messing with things :x

thank you, I take it you can probably change the image by playing around with the .sh script?

i hate to mess with the boot, not because i can’t fix it, but because its so problematic, But this is beautiful to take the risk for it.

This script messes up the permissions of /boot/grub, /usr/share/images and /etc/grub.d by making them world-writable.
It also makes the assumption that you don’t already have a directory called “Grub” in the current directory. If you do and have files in it, it’s gone after you ran the script.

I wouldn’t recommend distributing this script in its current form.

Are we still not getting a graphical grub with 10.04? SUSE have been able to implement a really good one for years.

I am currently resolving any issues you may have… Also, Because of the feature freeze we may NOT be able to submit until 10.10

So I ran the script, and it still comes up in text mode. Is there a grub configuration option I am missing?
