Session Management Docklet Coming to Docky

Too lazy to move your mouse to the session applet to restart? Always dreamed of locking your machine from Docky? Been crying out for a hibernate button on your dock?

Say hello to forthcoming session management docklet by ~mebitek.

Although it’s not part of Docky trunk at the moment (meaning you won’t find it in the PPA for a little while yet) the docklet proposes to be an awesome little addition to the ever bulging waistband of Docky Docklets

I’d like to teach the world to sing
I’d love to see the docklet become configurable so that the ‘default’ action when clicking the icon could be user set as currently it invokes lock-screen.

    Good :)

Cool!! I am wondering, if docky would do the “search” thing like GnomeDo!

    • http://twitter.com/bustible Jon

No, I won’t. Do turns into Docky when Compiz is on, I think. Docky as a standalone doesn’t search.

      • Carl

That’s not quite right- Docky was originally one of the “themes” of Gnome Do, which could be optionally selected from the preferences dialogue, though it did require compositing in order to run. In fact, as of the current version of Do (0.8.2), it’s still there! You can select it even now.

Docky was split off into a separate program when it was realised that much of the project went beyond the scope of Do. There’s a bug open against Docky (filed as “Wishlist”) asking for Do integration (https://bugs.launchpad.net/docky/+bug/446049).

For now, you can just run Do and Docky side by side, using one of the other Do themes. They make a great team for launching and managing tasks.

Oh my God, FINALLY! I’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time!

that dialouge box needs to say “save session”, as in being able to save all current running windows to re-open on restart and then im satisfied =)

actually it won’t be a little but quite a while. consider how long the branch for dropbox does exist. or the one for google-calendar. not to mention the expose one.

How to change plymouth theme with xsplash theme?

gksu nautilus /usr/share/images/xsplash – exist in ubuntu 10.04 but is useless for me :(

  • brypie

    AT LAST!!!!!

    Woohoo!

All I need now is a system menu docklet.

    Thanks Docky developers…

Yeah, that’s cool. You know what I wished Docky had? a Workspace Switcher, similar to what Gnome-Do’s Docky has.

I want a “Main Menu” docklet for Docky!! D’:

The goal for me would be to run Gnome without panels and do everything through Docky and Do. Next, I’d like to see this work for the other desktop managers (especially the lighter ones).

    • blahblahblah

I’ve been doing that for months now, it’s great =)
Although I do use Compiz for quick window switching too.

    Docky rocks my pants off.

    Seriously, anybody seen my pants??

    Dear Docky developers,

Could you please make a “places” applet that only takes up one icon, and when you click on it your bookmarks fly up above it, like other docks. I have 6+ bookmarks and I don’t need them taking up 6 icons on my dock; what the current bookmarks applet does.

    Kind Regards,
    Benjamin

Seriously! i want something like stack from the mac dock!

      http://martinleslie.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/dock-stack.jpg

I doesn’t have to wobble or anything! just be there so I don’t have a
separate dock just for my book marks!

      Please?

      • Johnnyanony

awn has had stacks for ages.

AWN also has a workspace switcher. For all the hype docky gets AWN is just better.

        • Anonymous

          Agreed

          • pt

Places would be a must for me to drop the panel. One of the big pluses when you compare it to Windows.

AWN never had Gnome-Do, but then Docky will be losing that soon.

I used to use AWN, but I find Docky more usable.
I do miss that stacks applet butt i would rather have one that automatically loads all my bookmarks.

          • Johnnyanony

I just never really got the appeal of docky over the current incarnation of AWN. Maybe it’s based on the AWN of old which was a bit worse, but the current version is pretty good.

With a workspace switcher, menus, and the inclusion of notification icons awn totally eliminates the need for a gnome panel at all(though I keep one up top because I do prefer the mint menu and like to keep the shutdown button on there too reduce clutter).

I’ve tried docky but never really used it enough to discover anything that puts it above awn. All I ever see are excited posts on this site closely following every possible docky update and getting exited about features that awn already has.

          • Guestposter

The places applet and file browser applet actually has all of your bookmarks in a better organized package than docky. You really should give 0.4/0.39 a try you’ll be pretty impressed.

useful, sure, but how often will people be using this?

for me, it will be just once or twice a day. can’t they have some “system” docklet, which when you click it, reveals this and other similar system utilities? this will stop the dock becoming too cluttered with things which are not accessed very often.

Sorry but that’s not enough for me to switch from AWN.

That’s really nice, but the docky team could worry a bit more in finding a solution to the duplicate icon that appears when you launch a java based application (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/docky/+bug/484610).
