Pinta: A GTK Paint.Net clone for Ubuntu

One application many new users of Ubuntu bemoan the lack of when first using Ubuntu is a simple drawing and editing program akin to Microsoft’s Paint.

Pinta aims to fulfil that gap by providing a simplified and easy to use alternative to professional applications such as GIMP.

Features

Pinta is, proudly, modelled after the Windows application ‘Paint.Net’. The interface and planned feature set are all based on those found in the Window version Pinta is built around, so if you’ve used paint.net before, Pinta should feel very familiar.

Despite being a relatively young project you’ll find the following features already nestled beneath its hood: -

  • Drawing Tools
Paintbrush, Pencil, Shapes, Eraser, Selection lasso’s
  • Multiple Layers
  • Full History
    Unlimited levels of Undo/Redo.
  • Adjustments and Effects
Several effects included – Invert, Sepia, Black and White, Auto Level.

The development team have plenty more features planned so consider this release a mere appetiser for the main course to come.

I think it better if someone took GIMP with all it power and removed most of its functionality to create a simpler version, and maybe can be called GIMP lite

    • Anonymous

That would be a lot better than making yet another application which depends on mono!

      • http://seifsallam.co.cc/ Seif Sallam

i don’t have any grudge against Mono, but we re-invent the wheel. the problem with GIMP is its too complicated UI for end-user needs, so just fork it and put it on diet

Whoops i forgot to mentions that Pinta is Cairo/GTK – no mono here!

@Seif – i love the idea of a GIMP Lite. That really would be ace!

Glad that you liked my idea

BTW Cairo/GTK is the graphics library used, not the programming language, the programming language is C# and used the .NET library (Mono)

Rather someone should clean up this mess that Gimp is. There’s no need for removing functionality – gimp starts up and is fast already. Clutter and dreaded multiple windows is just the biggest problems I have. Not even mentioning doubled menu items under RMB.

Pinta looks like it gets shit done. Plus for it.

        “Less Is More”
There are 2 kind of users, End-User and the Professional.
End-User just want to do some simple drawing with simple effects. [Less Features]
Professional want to have all features to be able to manipulate his photo. [More Features]

End-User don’t understand photo-manipulation and specially the workflow, so in best cases he will just use 8% of GIMP, and he will find it hard to use it. But if GIMP is simple only functionality he needs will be available for him, in an easy to understand way. The user will be happy and use 90% of GIMP lite. [The User Don't want to think, So Don't make him think]

The best way to measure the simplicity of an application is by letting kids sit on the computer trying to figure out what to do.

I must to say: they have to keep it simple!
    GIMP is for professionals.

It’s about time! I wish this app the best of luck.

“Better yet it uses Cairo and GTK and not mono”

Please rewrite this. Not only it’s wrong (it DOES use mono) but it makes no sense, as it makes it look like Cairo/GTK and Mono are somehow things of the same level.

I could see thing being very useful to me as I need to do some touch up here and there and GIMP is way too advanced for me.

I wonder if, instead of creating a sort of fork of gimp, adding an option to the gimp to hide commonly unused buttons an option (like just a checkbox saying “light mode”) would be better. Even if most of the original source is kept, I dont’t think handling these as a separate project could work very well in the long time.

    • Pablo Marchant

This was supossed to be a reply to the suggestion of creating a gimp-light, a simlified version of the gimp. What happened to that comment??

      • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

I can moderate and respond comments via email and, obviously, i get spam so when i sometimes responde to ‘delete’ them it randomly takes other comments out with it… I’ve no idea why…

Great Idea!!!! Then GIMP could still be included in the default installation!!!!

so a beginner / casual user mode, and a more advanced mode. Brilliant

Not gimp light as in the middle of creating a picture, you might decide that you need to have advanced features, and would therefore “activate” the advanced mode without changing apps

It would be good if at the end of a session, the mode was saved for the next time one opens the programme

What a brilliant programme, mono or not (in this case not); it is fast, responsive, and has a nice feel.

Installed and on my list of apps that I shall install on Lucid too!!!

    • zekopeko

      >mono or not (in this case not)

      Pinta is a mono app.

      • Anonymous

        NOOOOOOOO!!!!!1….OH WHY GOD?!?! WHY??!!…
would be my response if i really cared about mono…..I could care less if it was written in python (kinda unrealistic, but some awesome coders exist out there)

  • Mraz

I really like it, its functional and enough for the average user like myself. I saw it on the screenshots you posted up (the fonts article) im glad i was curious enough to look for the program.

HELO….the penguins are coming….in nice aliased GTK decorations :D

  • Herbert

It’s a nice app, but it’s too simple and there’s a lot work to do on it, in order to consider it as a clone of Paint.Net.

OMG, this is so awsome, there were so many times i needed to make some simple image manipulation operation and i was forced to use bloated GIMP for this, i know there is kpaint or something like that around, but installing this whole kde libs and stuff for some simple app makes me nuts.
