Ubuntu Software Centre Adds 2 More ‘Featured’ Apps

Two more applications have been added to the ‘Featured’ section of the Ubuntu Software Centre in Ubuntu 10.04.

3D creation tool Blender and publication software Scribus join graphics favourite The GIMP and lightweight word processor Abiword.

With more applications yet to be added – what would you choose to sit alongside the above apps on the ‘Featured’ shelf?

    Gnome-Do

I love abiword, but it kind of replaces OOWriter, and I think it was stated that featured software should not duplicate software installed by default

  • Anonymous

Actually, do we know what are the criteria, if any? I guess they’d not particularly want apps that just duplicate functionality. Abiword may be ok as it fits a different niche from Openoffice. This might mitigate against Thunderbird, but I’d really want it there, with Sunbird. VirtualBox too

  • Mohan

So are the featured apps going to change according to stats of them being used by users?

  • Jay

Yeah, I can understand not wanting to duplicate functionality here – i.e. Thunderbird, as much as I love it, maybe shouldn’t be in the featured shelf. I think Gnome-Do is a shoe-in. Maybe Miro also? Might also be a good idea to feature some accounting software (GNUcash/HomeBank) though neither of those is really worthy of a feature slot…it’s just that those are essential for some people.

Delighted to see Blender in there (now if only we had a time machine so that could be version 2.6).

I think Lyx would be another good one, since it is a really easy but extremely enlightening thing to play with. Someone may not know to look for it, really, but after some exploration may learn that the LaTeX approach to writing documents fits them better than the Microsoft Works approach.

My Installation of blender in not working, using Ubuntu 10.04, I even installed it from the bz2 tar. What is happing with that is not the only program that doesn’t work on my system.
