Pino Gets URl Shortening, Other Options

Pino Version: 0.1.5

Pino (a twitter application We’ve blogged about many times previously) has added URL shortening, options to specify how many statuses to display, fonts, start up mode and quite a bit more in an update today.

U.RLs
Url shortening services currently supported by Pino are:

  • goo.gl
  • is.gd

Once you’ve entered a URL into the ‘text’ field choose the Edit > Shorten URLs… entry to shorten them.

Other New Features
Pino now offers the option to start minimized to the system tray – a feature many people have been waiting for. Enable it via the ‘Preferences > Main’ menu.

Other features new in this version are: -

  • Option to display twitter nick instead of name in timeline
  • Set default font for timelines
  • Set a “fresh statuses colour”
  • Nicks, tags and urls now highlighted in the text field

Install
If you’re using the Pino PPA you’ll already have it by now (go to update manager and it’ll be waiting)

If you’re not using the Pino PPA you can add it (and the vala team PPA – which you need) using: -

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:vala-team/ppa
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:troorl/pino

Then run

  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get install pino

Pino Icon Hullabaloo
If you followed our quick tip on how to replace the Pino tray icon this update will require you to re-apply that tip again. That post is here.

On the subject of the Ergo Proxy icon Pino uses, the official site his now displaying this banner: -

If you’re feeling creative why not knock something up and send it to them? Anything to ditch Bambi in a dress…

Pino is awesome. So much better than gwibber! They never seem to fix that bug in gwibber where it stops talking to twitter after about 20 minutes, and you’ve gotta restart the app.

“options to specify how many statuses to display”
If I remember correctly, that was already implemented in 0.1.4.

I use TweetDeck, as I have a fast computer. TweetDeck being an AIR app doesn’t bother me. It does all I want to do.

First time I heard of URL shortening services I wondered why would anyone want to do that. Then I started using Twitter and I finally learned why I need to make URLs shorter. Ain’t we lucky there are so many services out there that can do that for us?
