Gnome VLC player gets new name, PPA

A few weeks back we blogged about 'GNOME VLC Player' €“ a native GTK+ spin of VLC with the mission to have a €œsimple€ interface inside a gtk+ body.

That project has since been re-named 'GNOME Media Player' and has gotten its very own PPA – thus making installation a snap.

In Development

The project is still in active development so don't expect every bell and whilst to be, well, ringing and whistling.

Nice to see this project is moving along nicely. I assume at some point the chaps at Gnome will look to have this installed/integrated straight out of the box..? If not, it wouldn’t be a bad idea – VLC is one of the first things I install on a new build.

EDIT: Currently trying to play a DVD from an iso file – having a problem selecting options on the dvd menu – mouse click and enter not working…any have any ideas?

I am the one who uploaded the PPA packages. DVD menu problems may be occuring right now, because this project is still very very young. Please report a bug about it here:- https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-media-player/+filebug

No problems, will do first thing in the morning with as much detail as possible.

        Keep up the good work.

are there plans for this player to become the “standard” in gnome?
i think the ubuntu standard “totem” is a great one and has everything i need.
But VLC (knowing it from the windows-world) is much more feature-rich, e.g. great streaming features. so it would be a great replacement without disadvantages i think.

All the Gnome multimedia apps are based around Gstreamer. VLC and this fork is based on FFmpeg, I can’t see Gnome ever using this application for that very reason. It could well be that a lot of popular distros ship it, but I don’t ever see it being an official part of Gnome.

Also, when Ubuntu was considering PiTiVi they considered calling it Gnome Video Editor instead but they turned down that idea because they felt the Gnome folks might not appreciate Ubuntu naming things ‘Gnome XYZ’. I kinda agree really. Why name something Gnome Media Player when its nothing to do with Gnome.

        • http://twitter.com/svD4 Simon

Can you describe why you dislike FFmpeg?

          • http://www.linuxmint.com/ Jimbo

I never said I disliked it. I said the Gnome guys won’t endorse an app that uses it in place of Gstreamer. Gnome and Gstreamer are very tightly woven these days. If you want an app to be endorsed and used as part of the default Gnome stack then it needs to be Gstreamer based.

It would be like Apple switching to Gecko to render web stuff in iTunes when the entire rest of the OS uses webkit. Not going to happen.

that might be fixed by installing libdvdcss2, you could try it out.

      • Anonymous

Thanks but I already have libdvdcss2 installed. No doubt its probably a bug due to the age of the project.

Isn’t Gnome Media Player a bit… “Hello, I’m default, and I have the whole gnome project supporting me!”?

I mean, if they don’t, it sounds just a little but pretensious.. But it’s ok, really, not that I care =) It seems to be a good project, rock on =D

Looks really good so far, but I’m still really happy with the normal VLC media player. I don’t think it’s going to be really easy to make VLC a lot more simplistic, because I think it’s pretty easy to use already. But that’s just my opinion.

I was unable to upload the package for Jaunty and older releases due to backward compatibility problems. Well, I have uploaded the package for Lucid.

Looks nice, promises a lot. Full screen on my setup is a bit jerky and blocks slightly. I like the clean no-nonsense interface. However, some files I have have subtitles hard-encoded/defaulted on, and there doesn’t seem to be an option to turn them off (like VLC does)

Still, very nice. PPA installed, hope to see improvement soon!

Nice project. But bad choice of a name. There’s already a project called GNOME MPlayer, a front-end to MPlayer. The new name is bound to create confusion.

  • Mohan

awesome, going to install it, although I don’t really mind the QT version of VLC. :)

Looks pretty nice, but for some reason the pictures gets a bit too crisp when fullscreening it.

It could do with volume control as well. I know you can change the volume per-app in sound preference, but that’s pretty annoying if you need to change volume on the fly without upping the volume for every thing else as well.

Oh, and not being “on top” by default. Why am I writing this here?

You may also add the line
ppa:gnome-media-player-development/development
to the System >> Administration >> Software Sources, Other Software tab entry line to add the PPA.
