How do you pronounce the name of this app? Am I right in thinking it’s “Guy-a-deck”?

    • http://orkutcidio.deliriocoletivo.org Peterson Espaçoporto

It is something in the lines of “goo I a decky” (as in docky, but with e). Also goo and I are really together, as in the letter y, but like.. g-y =)

      • Anonymous

As someone who can only speak English, my mind is in a total spin! So it’s “Gooly-decky?”

Think I’ll stick with Banshee :)

        • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

A lot of people simply refer to it as G-QUE. I can -never- remember how to spell Guayadeque let alone pronounce it!

          • Anonymous

G-Que is the unofficial name and used the most….In conversations with the developer anonbeat, I get more confused with how to say it so G-Que it is for me

          • http://www.jamendo.com/en/artist/Hallucination_Layer Uncle Spellbinder

G-Que sounds to much like that “men’s” magazine GQ

          • http://www.FreezingMoon.org/ Dread Knight

Hehe, kind of a silly/stupid name for an app. It’s a good app but the name won’t do it justice.

        • http://orkutcidio.deliriocoletivo.org Peterson Espaçoporto

Tommy Brunn explained it way better, have a look! =D

Also, believe me, Rhythmbox is awful for brazilians who can’t speak english… =P

          • daas88

Yeah, the “thmb” in Rhythmbox can be a bit tricky…
And about Guayadeque, it’s pretty easy to pronounce in spanish so i guess that’s the native language of its devs^^

          • http://orkutcidio.deliriocoletivo.org Peterson Espaçoporto

            Yeah, it must be =D

    • http://blastfromthepast.se/ Tommy Brunn

Gu-aya-deck-e is what I believe to be the correct pronunciation.

  • http://www.theonelike.me theonelikeME

voted for icon7. icon3 looks nice but resembles of rhythmbox.

like winamp can we not make it configurable?

  • Anonymous

I chose icon 6. Seems to have that tango/humanity style to it, and has a slight bit of style, but not over the top.

  • Anonymous

    great work Mrmotinjo

  • http://www.jamendo.com/en/artist/Hallucination_Layer Uncle Spellbinder

    Gway Ya Deck Ay

…and one of the fi8nest music players I’ve used on Linux.

  • Yfrwlf

Thought 11 and 12 were the most distinct. Some of the other ones could mean any ol’ music player. So then you have the dilemma: do you want it to shout “I’m a music player” like DanRabbit’s and some of the others, and perhaps “blend” a little more with an average desktop, or something more recognizable? Also, loud colors might clash more with various themes, while more neutral colors may blend better, but of course it’s all preference and any single icon will always clash with different icons and themes unless you redo it for each one.

I voted for icon 9 by Islington. I think he’s done a great job creating a really unique icon. I don’t think anyone can look at that icon and confuse it for Songbird or Banshee. But, beyond that, he’s also done a good job with making it recognizable. Even with the abstract letter form, you can tell that its sitting on a record. Another thing I like is that it looks really scalable. Icons 11 and 12 look nice at the larger size, but I’m worried about some of the elements at 24px and below.

    • http://samineru.blogspot.com/ samineru

Just wanna say that I wholeheartedly second danrabbit, 9 has all kinds of things going for it like that. Muted color set so it will fit in with anything, it looks like it would scale well, and it’s very unique without being too complicated.

  • Anonymous

I like 11 & 12. I think 11 while paused/closed and 12 when open and playing would look great on Docky.

  • nothingspecial

    G-Que works for me

  • http://cybolic.wordpress.com/ Cybolic

I voted for 11, though I liked 12 as well and of course the ever-awesome work of DanRabbit in 8 (though it makes the app look like a CD player. The reason I would go with 11 instead of 12 is that it’s usually a good idea to have an icon with an easily identifiable outline, but (as chrishutt already suggested) with 12 as a status icon.

    • http://ndrw.me AndrewNoNumbers

I voted for 12, though I also had a hard time choosing between it and 11. I like that 11 is more simple, but the icon is way too vertical. And the extra outline in 12 makes it look like a bulls-eye.

  • hugmyballs

    I voted for 12, but I like 11.

  • nothingspecial

I pronounce it guy (as in guy fawkes) a (as in little letters rather than a capital A (ay) deck (the floor of a ship)

  • Jayo

there isnt any “ay”, “aye” “ey” or “e” at the end, poster Tom Cowell has it right, its guy a deck, as in here in europe, you cash a cheque (the correct way) but in the states its a check, either way its pronounced the same way, so deque = deck, get it? guy a deck!?! record deck…..? ugh FORGET IT!!!! ^_^

  • daas88

No offense ditchbijzee, but i think those icons are ugly. I chose icon #7.

  • Future ruler

Yes whell i agree, i should also comand humankind, but something is still not working, also this icon from mrmotinjo or something like that is best for my lordship !

  • Hector

Sorry for bothering everyone but I see you got trouble pronuncing the name. Let me tell you, as I talk spanish, that the way to pronounce it is g (as in game), u (as in gull), a (as in slang) ya (as you would say it), dequ (as in deck) and a strong e, as in length. I hopefully expect to have helped you.

  • nothingspecial

So, in broad Mancunian – goo-a-ya-deck-eh?

    • Anonymous

      Yes, exactly like that

  • Yi Sun-sin

My favorites are 4, 5, 6, 8 and 13. 11 and 12 are good, but not square enough to be suitable for the menus.

  • http://www.FreezingMoon.org/ Dread Knight

I voted for second design of Mrmotinjo.
And surprise, it’s number one. Anyway, seems a lot of people don’t know shit about good logo designs and they don’t think about unique identity, scale and so on =)

    • Anonymous

I dunno Dread Knight. The problem is that this isn’t about logo design at all. It’s about icon design. The biggest problems I have with those designs are that they don’t really fit into any Linux desktop I’ve seen. The style isn’t Gnome, Oxygen, Humanity, Gnome-Colors, Tango, elementary, Blue Curve, or anything I can think of.

      • Chris

Most of the icons on the GNOME desktop look pretty bland to me. In a lot of places, this is a good thing: I don’t want the .txt file icon or the help icon to stand out. You also get cross-application consistency out of guidelines, which is great.

However, application icons are different. Your icon 8 is beautiful and makes it immediately clear what Guayadeque does, but it looks like a generic iTunes. Call me shallow, but whenever I have to use a Linux program with a generic-looking icon, I feel like I’m using an inferior product. It’s an imitation!

Mrmotinjo’s icons provide branding, yet it’s still clear that the application plays music. For a third-party app, that’s perfect. If it came with Ubuntu by default, I’d tone it down a little, in order to maintain consistency.

        Just my two cents.

        • Anonymous

I agree the icon that I did is a bit generic. But all I did was restyle their old icon. No more, no less. I could probably come up with some different things, but nobody asked. So I just left it at that.

Personally, I like icon 9. I think it’s original and it has a Oxygen/OS X kind of style to it.

But, when I look at those icons I don’t really see desktop. And to be honest I can’t really tell what that is at first glance. it’s very Web 2.0 and would look AWESOME as a logo on a web page. But, on the desktop I just can’t see it.

      • http://www.FreezingMoon.org/ Dread Knight

I think a specific application’s icon needs to clearly act as a logo as well. Yours is nice, but too generic. I can only associate it with “audio cd” at most, but not with a specific audio application. Think of winamp, it’s icon is one of the main things that made the app so popular.

They should also do a vote for a rename, it seems like it confuses many people.

  • Anonymous

    Voted for 7
11,12 has a similarity with banshee icon, 3 has similarity with rhythmbox icon

  • lol

I think number 9 is the best, very classy and a standout from the rest.

  • Anonymous

11 is the best for me

  • Chame

It is obvious that icon #9 by Islington is the best around here. Ask any professional designer and he will confirm that.
But people like that squint-eyed twitter-style nightmare. It will be big mistake to choose so stupid icon while having much nicer one.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/AXESQLBUWUNVG2OLO7IYEVK7AM Rodislav

hi, i have also some player icons, how can i send them to you !? thanks

  • Anonymous

though I liked icon 11 more but wow DanRabbit you are a great artist.

  • Chris

I’d really like an icon between the styles of hojgaard and Mrmotinjo.
Mrmotinjo’s icons provide good branding and are clear, but as DanRabbit mentioned, they don’t fit in as well on the desktop. 12 eventually got my vote.
Hojgaard’s icons fit in better, but none of them really stand out (though 4 is okay). The black-square-with-a-letter-on-it is unimaginative: why isn’t it a CD case or an album cover?

I’m not sure why people like 9 (Islington). The G is in the uncomfortable area between graphic design and represents-a-real-object. Is it a swirl of silver paint? A piece of tin foil?

  • Anonymous

    #12 look freaking awesome.

  • http://ghetto.k2city.eu Matej MoÅ¡ko

I like the idea the best

  • Vihar

very pastel, clear, shows the music icon and the ‘g’. will look good as a small icon as well!

  • Anonymous

def like 11, 12 just doesnt mix colors right

  • docus

That’s the problem with democracy … sometimes the majority is WRONG!

    (Just joking…)

I like 11 and 12, but Islington’s design looks MUCH slicker, cleaner and bolder to me.

I really like this app and I’ll be keeping an eye on it. PLEASE can we have iPod support?!

  • http://www.google.com/profiles/105705293887826322118 aL3xa

    To, Coimire, brate!!!
    =)))

  • Acir Mandello Junior

I think the design must be simple and direct. Icon 12 has a modern, but simple design! Very cool!

COME ON!
