Pymazon – Amazon MP3 Download Replacement
Monday, January 18, 2010
‘Pymazon’ is a replacement downloader for the Amazon.mp3 music store designed to be lightweight & fast.
Users of Amazon’s mp3 store will probably have yelled a “yuck” in the direction of the proprietary Linux downloader they provide, with 64bit Ubuntu users also throwing in a “whaddayameanno64bitversion??” for good measure.
This is where ‘Pymazon’ comes in – it replaces the official Amazon downloader with something more efficient, in both GUI and command-line based form.

Download/Install
To install ‘Pymazon’ in Ubuntu, you’ll need to do the following steps.
Install dependencies
- sudo apt-get install python-crypto python-qt4
Download and install Pymazon
- Download the latest .tar.gz @ code.google.com/p/pymazon/downloads/
- Extract
- Open a terminal session
- Navigate to the extracted folder using the ‘cd’ command (sans apostrophes)
- Install: sudo python setup.py install
Create Menu Entry
You can launch Pymazon in GUI mode using ‘pymazon –g’. It’s much easier to create shortcut to do this.
- Right click on the ‘Menu’ applet on your panel
- Choose ‘Edit Menu’
- Select the destination for the Shortcut (i.e. ‘Internet’ or ‘Sound & Video’)
- Create a new launcher using ‘Pymazon’ for the name and ‘pymazon –g’ for the command
